As I was hurtling along the motorway today I noticed the fuel guage barely moving then next time I looked, it'd moved quite a bit.
As these things don't seem that accurate, why haven't manufacturers improved on this technology?
Surely there must be a better way of knowing just how much fuel remains in the tank - or how much has been used?

I think fuel gauges are slightly better than the old days when they used to show full when cornering left and empty when cornering right.
Or our Pug 205 which shows empty going uphill and full going down
But yeah, there must be a more accurate way of measuring what's left in the tank. After all, there's a computer that tells you how many miles you'll get from what's in the tank (although on the Doblo it seems extremely optimistic)

My mind wandered somewhat as I wondered if they could use flow meters in conjunction with the onboard computer.

At the factory, you have an empty tank - they set the computer to show empty.
They have to put some fuel in to get the engine running - the flow meter tells the computer how much went in.
The computer decides how much it is going to squirt into each pot as the engine is running (and maybe use a flowmeter in the pipe to the engine (just for comparison?).

While I agree it would be a nice idea, would it not also be just another electronic gizmo to go wrong and cost huge amounts of money to correct? Or am I just getting cynical in my old age?

Maybe i'm getting cynical too.... Could it be that the Doblo is infact just a ****e van? I'm still not overly keen on mine!

OK, although I now have a slight niggle with mine (see thread "hottest day...") I still love the dobbin for its versatility & capacity.
The fact that I can step into it so easily, the panoramic view common to taller vehicles, the cavernous interior (not so common to MPVs), the box shape is far better for transporting items than many MPVs can offer, it'll happily shift along the superslab - with plenty of poke left over should it be required.
I've had mine for a year now & I'm still happy with it.

Maybe as a van they're not the best, but as an MPV I don't think you can beat it for value for money.
As mine is a 7 seater I compare it to the next cheapest 7 seat mpv, which is about double the price...no contest.

The mpv is the VAN! with more glass and seats:D

In my opinion van ,mpv both brilliant , my cargo is the best vehicle ever owned in all respects. Had them all Hot hatches, large salloons, estates and for me for the money in a sane world everyone would drive around in a Doblo:)

But as the worlds gone mad like my brother in law who has a lexus RX 3.0 v6 gets 20mpg and has recently through me sourced a second car a 1.2 punto active sport getting 47+ never uses the lexus now as not stopped banging on about mpg.:D

Doblos for me!
