Today I was trying to trace a fault with the headlamps. It seemed the fault was between fuse 12 and the right hand dipped headlamp bulb. I took the inside fusebox out to try and find which wire goes from the fuseholder to the headlamp. There is a set of plugs similar to the zero insertion force type used in computers. I had to remove all these to get the fusebox out. I thought they could only go back one way but now I'm not so sure. I put it back together, having traced which wire I wanted and thought I would try the lights again in case disturbing the plugs had rectified the fault. All the other lights worked but the offside dip was still dead. I then decided to check if everything else on the vehicle still worked. The starter turned but the engine didn't start. I then noticed none of the warning lamps were on. In fact most things are not working now, including lights, indicators, radio, heater, windows, central locking etc. When you try to use the central locking the indicators flash as normal but the locks don't. Also sometimes the wipers come on briefly when locking by any means.
since my difficulties started when I tried to start the engine I'm wondering if some anti tamper device is shutting everything down

Panic over :) The multi pin plugs in the fusebox have a lever with pegs that engage in tracks in the socket. The big plug on the back of the fusebox was not fully plugged in as the pegs had failed to engage in the tracks. As you pull back the lever you should see the plug drop further into the socket. To fix it I had to take the whole lot to bits again by torchlight but it was a big relief to get the Doblo working again
