Technical New Battery

You don't say where you are, which makes a reply difficult. I always get batteries from a local independent parts dealer. If they offer you own brandm try asking where they get them from.

:yeahthat:
I'm lucky with my local independent tyre/exhaust/battery garage, they're honest, reliable and cheap.
There must be someone like that somewhere in Manchester (y).

My battery has gone flat again, how can I tell if it is the duff battery or the alternator not charging?

Without a test meter, start the engine & let it idle. Turn on full beam, hazards, rear window demister...
The alternator should be putting out enough juice to cope with the load & some spare to top up the battery.
If it isn't putting enough out then things'll start to dim & your engine may labour as it tries to keep going.

Alternatively, a decent garage would put a meter on it, takes a couple of seconds.

I had a situation with a car some years ago where the battery would discharge over the course of a day or two.
Long story short, turned out to be a dodgy cigar lighter - the element had broke (how? never used it) & wascausing a short so the battery was warming up a part of the element. The current drain was so slight to be unnoticeable. The garage had the car hooked to a computer to printout the drain. A new, fully charged battery lasted a weekend (Friday evening - Monday morning)

The battery is OK but man at the shop wasn't convinced it was the alternator. The charge must have lasted 3 weeks since I first posted. I remember the same thing happened last year in the winter but has been OK for the rest of the year. Maybe a bad connection somewhere.

The cold weather will always take its toll on a battery - even moreso on an older battery. You used to be able to buy lagging jackets for them (similar to what wraps around the header tank) but not seen anything like that for a long while.
Trouble is, these days, the engine compartment is so tight it's often hard to drop a spanner in there - although the vital nut will always find its way to oblivion!

first place i would look is the earth lead
then do a simple disconnection of + (red) overnite to make sure battery's not discharging.
check alturnater as said most parts shops will test for free.
then now you know other faults curtious of ff look at them.

I've got an 03 Doblo Cargo and I figure it has got to be due a battery soon. I have not got the radio code or key codes etc so will I be in trouble when I eventually have to disconnect the old battery and replace with new.

^^^if you leave it running while changing the battery old for new you'll not loose any codes.

It sure will, but don't be turning any lights or wipers on. Also be careful you don't touch the + terminal off the body!!! Safer get somebody to hold it while you do the swop.

Under no circumstances run the car without a battery!! The battery is the load for the alternator and the resultant voltage can rise to 18 odd volts a very dangerous thing for the electronics, it also can wreck the alternator.
The safest way is to use a simple 12volt supply even a wall wart that gives 12 volts about 300ma, make sure every thing is off and the doors shut, connect your 12 volt DC supply the correct way round + to +, - to - to the battery leads or - to chassis and + to the battery + lead remove the battery and make sure the leads dont short out or the supply leads don't come off and swap the battery over. All should be OK if you did it correctly.

I figured there could be a risk when changing a battery to starting the car engine and then leaving it running whilst removing and replacing battery's. However, not having any service info such as codes etc is a problem and I had considered coupling my battery charger to the relevant + & - leads during the changeover. I think it would workif I'm carefull but would appreciate comments if I've missed a crucial point.
