Had my first problem with my dobby 120.(6200miles) Going down the M3 with wife, dog, job lot of sailing kit, when engine failure light came on. Engine kept going at lower power than usual. Turned off M3 at Basingstoke and went to Fiat dealer Alan Gibson. Within 45 minutes we were back on the road with a new filter in the exhaust system, under warranty, no charge. Brilliant service at no notice. Their cheerful mechanic said that I must be driving short distances and rather gently (true) Apparently this can block the filter in the emmision system - drive it as if you had stolen it he says, give it some welly!!
It seems you can be too kind to a diesel, I shall probably soon be moaning about speeding tickets.

I didn't now they put filters in exhausts. What sort of a filter was it?

It is more likely the DPF (Diesel particle filter) aparently it needs the right kind of driving one of its cleaning cycles. There's no filter to replace they just start the cycle manually.

This happened to mine, a 120, and I was told that a local taxi driver is a regular for a cleaning cycle.

I'm a real Fiat fan but its daft, the computer knows what the fault is and can run the cycle why doesn't the message say 'DPF cycle required' ... 'do xxx' and save this aggro?

If the DPF is at fault the DPF warning light comes on.

Its very unlikely the DPF was changed bacause......

1)Too expensive to keep in stock & its not a fast selling item!

2)Takes more than 45 minutes to diagnose & change.

3)A artificial regeneration would of (should of) been carried out.

4)If you were driving on motorway the DPF system would of carried out a 'natural' regeneration then.

Sure it wasn't the airflow meter?

(EGR would of also taken longer to diagnose/renew)

There was no DPF warning light on mine, just the 'engine failure' message.

There was no real change in performance, although you tend to go somewhat more gently after that kind of warning. The dealer took it in and announced that it was the DPF and that they had cycled it. We drive a very mixed 40 or 80 miles a day and if that doesn't let the DPF cycle I don't know what will. In fact we often notice periods where the the mpg drops unexpectedly and assumed that was somehow related.

guys
mine is the same
an 06 19 multijet
I am a taxi driver and its the same

engine failure, Limp mode, clears after you turn ignition on and off

took to fiat every month and they carry out a regeneration which does not last for long

My mechanic took apart the cat, jet washed the filter, cleaned the cat and again it did not last

he has changed a "dump Valve" which so far has worked after 4 weeks but again Fiat stated this is not under warranty because it should be a service item £1000
what a joke ...fiat should be ashamed!!!

My 105bhp version doesn't have the DPF but heres the point.

All diesels with or without DPF most have EGR valve need to be driven hard at least once a day, Honest John website has always advocated it as has my own ownership of CR diesels.

Driving like an old lady will do nothing for a diesel.

I always drive it reasonably hard fully revving through the gears periodically.

Think of the comparison between the human body that exercises everyday full cardio workout or you usual slob hardly raising a finger. Whos heart and lungs do think will be the fitter.

Same for a car drive it hard allows for soot and deposits to be burned and blown out it allows for all parts of the engine to be fully lubricated.

How often have you come off the motorway after a good run and the engine feels looser, perkier.!!!!

pootling around at 2000rpm will give trouble EGR ,DPF .

The jtds are excellant engines and can take a good thrashing:D

But, I have to drive like an old lady at the moment, to save on fuel.
Giving it some welly, will use more fuel :(
