I follow an America website Jalopnik.com pretty closely and they've had a heated (sorry) discussion about the merits of warming up the engine prior to setting off. One of the posters mentioned a block heater as an alternative.
I was aware of them for Scandinavian vehicles but had never really thought about them much for the UK.
I'm not really keen on scraping ice of the car and the whole demisting thing so had a quick look on eBay, as you do, and I was quite surprised at how cheap they are.
Has anybody had any experience of them, esp. in the UK, and are they particularly difficult to fit? I was most intrigued about the ones that fit to the cooling system. Electricity's not a problem as the car sits in the drive.

Oh, and Happy New Year to everyone and best wishes for a year of trouble free motoring in 2018.

Hi Very popular in Canada, you see hotels with power sockets at the parking spaces. They certainly work but I don't know about the quality of the ebay ones. Needs to be on a time switch so you are not heating all night. Should also not get hot enough to open the thermostat or the heat will be wasted through the radiator.
The Croma had an option (standard for some markets) of a fuel powered preheater, "Webasto" style. It's in the manuals and ePer. Never seen one in the UK though.

Reading up on them there does seem to be a school of thought that even in the climates like parts of the UK in winter they'd reduce both time spent defrosting and demisting as well as wear and tear on the engine.

Don't suppose you've got any idea which hose it would be fitted into?

Operating strategy

The additional engine heater is fitted in the coolant circuit between the engine and the heat exchanger.
The heated coolant is supplied first to the engine. Once the coolant is heated up, the heat, depending on the heating level selected, is directed into the passenger compartment.

interface with the engine cooling system: the coolant leaving the power unit is directed to the heater and is returned to the circuit by a dedicated electric pump.

But does not show the heater hose. The Remove Replace gives the answer, The inlet to the heater is from the cabin heat exchanger.

The outlet from the heter goes to the thermostat housing

So it's in the hose between cabin heater outlet and thermostat housing. It needs a pump to circulate
