Technical "Check diesel fuel filter"

I'm no expert. The first time I ever changed a fuel filter was two years ago, on my Croma. However, to do it I took out the whole housing, emptied all the liquid out, then fitted the new filter and refitted the housing.

Would a garage change the filter without emptying the housing? If so then surely you'd be better off never changing it - all the gunk from the dirty side of the old filter would then be on the clean side of the new one, ready to get sucked straight into the engine.

I'd say it needs a filter change, together with another drain at the same time.

In fact, it might be the only problem the engine's ever had.

Latest update:

Check engine (P1206, replace or regenerate DPF) came back. This time I wasn't able to get rid of it the regular way.

And it seems like because of the state of the clogging, I couldn't do the forced regen? However, I noticed that unlike my other OBD reader software "Torque" you could actually remove errors while driving with "multiecuscan".

SO I went to highway with laptop in the shotgun seat and while driving over 100km/h with 4th gear (RPM over 2,5k) I resetted the P1206 error about 5 times before the DPF temperature suddenly rose above 600C and the regen started.

I had things to do so I wasn't able to drive the whole regen process. I still drove over 20min. And the results: 14% Filter clogging. So the percentage dropped over 80%.

And again I will have almost 1000km before the next regen..

Fiat 500x Cross Plus 2.0l diesel. After a major engine failure at 19,000 miles due to the failure of the high pressure fuel pump then engine had to be completely stripped down and rebuilt (cost £5734). Part of the rebuild was replacing the diesel fuel filter. As soon as the car reached 20,000 miles a message appeared "Check Diesel Fuel Filter". Apparently this message comes up automatically at 20,000 miles but I decided to have the filter replaced again. Next time I drove the car that message came up again and now it appears every time I start the car. The garage have scanned for fault codes and there aren't any. They checked the new filter again and it's ok. How do I get rid of this message?

Hi, they aren't a franchised Fiat dealer but they are very reputable. Don't know about the equipment because I'm not a technician.

The age of vehicle will also have a bearing... after a certain date.. full access to the cars on board 'computers' are FIAT /Alfa /Lancia only

Even the over the counter Italian specific kit wont work properly.

The car was first registered June 2016 so does that mean that only a Fiat dealer can re-set the message?

Thanks for that. I'll go back to the garage and let them know about this.(y)

Late to this but it unlikely to be the oil change issue.

What type of fuel filter is it, a metal can type or plastic housing with paper element?
If the can type there are two versions one with the water detector one without (cheaper) they may have fitted the wrong one. For either type they my have not fitted the sensor connector correctly .

Why woutld there be gunk on the side of the filter housing?

Unless yoube been running some very bad diesel and debirs should get sucked into the filter material itself
