My seicento is making a loud ticking noise and I am not sure what this is - it is worse on hot days, and better in the damp. Somebody said they though it was ticking at half engine speed?

Has anyone got any suggestions - and how can I go about fixing it as I am hoping to sell the car.....

Could be an 899cc, D....in which case theyre kinda tappy from the factory!

From my own experience with a 1.4 Bravo I would say it's the cam, as it rotates at half engine speed and makes a ticking/rattling sound. Take the cam cover off (if the engine is like that) and have a good look at the lobes of the cam, and the followers/tappets/whatever for wear.

Its an 899cc - could it be the tappets need adjusting?

If its camshft - is it essential to get fixed or will it be ok to leave it? If it needs fixing rough idea of part costs and labour time?

Ah, the 899 ticking.

Right. Change oil and filter, use a good quality 10w40 oil.

Run it for while, if that doesn't sort the problem you need to flush the engine.

Instructions later if need be, or use the search facility.

It may not be anything to worry about. My one has a slight ticking noise, and when it's very cold (not this time of the year) it sounds like a typewriter. I'd definately recommend, regularly changed, good 10w40 oil though. I change my oil every 6 months, even though I don't do many short trips, and it's supprising how dirty the oil gets.

If the camshaft is worn then eventually it will wear itself to almost circular and the engine will start cutting out. Don't know about the cost of parts for yours or labour as I fixed mine myself.

i have this tapping noise on my sporting, it sounds like a typewriter and is worse when cold. it comes from what sounds like under the rocker cover, its sticky tappets, flushing the eninge will probably help but im not too clued up on this so not sure..

Tap Tap is tappets.

Flush the engine, refill with new oil and have a listen.

It's VERY unlikely to be cam wear if you never ran it low of oil (and didn't boot it when it was cold). The whole point of tappets is they're softer, so they'll wear first. If you can't adjust it out, you bung in new ones.

Tapping from an 899 is usually hydraulic tappets that are stuck.

Tapping from a Sporting or any 1108 engined derivative could be tappets, but they are shim in bucket types which are not hydraulic and require mechanical rectification.
