1242 engine in a Seicento Sportin, any advice?

Hi All:)

After a year of faithful service from my N Plated Cinquecento SX I decided to treat my self, to a new all curvy:I, and of course bright yellow Seicento Sporting:).

Having got it home, ordered the bits to fix the body up (needed a new front bumper and bonnet) its looking good:).

Unfortunately;) the engines not lookin so good, leakin oil from the head and making a few noises that would be more at home in a b grade action movie;).

Rather than go for gettin the 1108 fixed up and running i want to stick a 1242 punto engine in it. I've been told it's not as difficult as it sounds, but i can only find info on the net about people that have done it to the Cinq's.

[?]Can anyone offer me any advice?[?]

thanx

dawozere

Assuming it's the same job as on a cinq I'd say it's a straight swap except for the following:

The down pipe needs lengthening about 10 - 15mm. Either add a spacer between the manifold and the down pipe or lengthen the down pipe. If you know someone who can weld it's a 10 minute job.

The cam belt cover needs to be trimmed back too but apart from that it's a straight swap.

Also speaking from experience give the ECU about 30 miles to adjust to the new engine. When I first put the 1242 in mine I felt no real difference, then it just started pulling more and more as it learnt the new settings. When I first took it out for a test drive I thought I was sold another 1108! Give it time and the ECU adjust!:D

If you've got the funds fit a new cam belt and maybe a clutch too while the transplant is being done.

Hi,

I agree with cracker. Can't see why the swap should be different from the cinquecento one. BUT this I guess only is true when you have an Seicento with an SPI injection. Wonder what happens when you have an MPI Seicento. You have to keep the MPI I guess, but should work too.
As for the ECU to settle in: had the same experience driving the first few yards thinking "is there any difference" going to the autobahn "hey! this isn't better than before" driving 50miles home "boy the car really goes better between 60-100" and driving around town "nice torque! I can even make a normal start at a stoplight with the A/C on full power"
Swapping to a 1242ccm is definately a thing to do!

I wonder if, you start off with a sei mpi engine and drop in a 1242 mpi engine, the ecu won't need fettling??

thats just what i was thinking brickfoot. you may be able to drop a punto 75 1242 into it, because they are mpi (arent they?). and you get slitghly better performance from the mpi as well.

i would imagine the same rules would apply to the sei as do to the cinq. So have a word with FixIt about mpi engines. Im sure there is a reason why you have to use the SPI punto engine. the 60 if I remember correctly?

anyway check before you go buying anything hehe

The new 60 is an MPI engine, (the one on my punto) but i'm not sure if that's new for this MK or if they had it before?

the 60 is usually an SPI engine (mk1 punto) and the MPI was a 75 engine

I used the 60 SPI engine from a mk1 punto as I didn't want the expense of swapping fuel pumps and ecu's to go to MPI.

cheers
