Hi All,
I'm looking to remove the steering wheel from a 1999 Seicento. The problem is, I don't want to interfere with the airbag. Are there any instructions on how to safely disconnect and reconnect the airbag? Has anyone any advice on this?
Any help would be great.

Thanks,

DC.

airbag was optional extra i think, not standard

should tell you on the steering wheel is airbag is fitted, something along the lines of srs or airbag, something like that. if you also look on the inside of the drivers b-pillars there will be a sticker telling you the date airbag needs checking

i dont really have a clue as to how to disconnect an airbag, but i wouldnt advise it, unless you do know what you doing, it could end up going belly up

it may throw up a warning light on the dash if something goes pear shaped too

may i ask why you want to disconnect and reconnect airbag, its not normally a done thing

Basically, something in the steering is rubbing somewhere and causes the steering to bahave unusually sometimes. My mechanic has seen the problem but can't get at it to fix it unless he takes the steering wheel off....which is where the trouble begins :)

Hi,
These are basic guidelines for disconnecting the steering wheel airbag....

1. Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes before starting work on the airbag.

2. Remove air bag fasteners and unplug airbag, store the airbag in a cool dry place, some contain a pyro charge so don't leave them out in the sun.

3 Set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position, the airbag is connected to the column by a coil of wires which can only turn so many revolutions in each direction(Turns Counter), this needs to be sticky taped into position when airbag is removed.

4. Remove steering wheel centre nut, try and keep one hand on the "Turns Counter" when removing the steering wheel from the column, as it will spin round to its end point if not restrained when the wheel is removed.

5. Sticky tape the "Turns Counter" into its straight ahead position and remove it from the column.

6. The column can now be worked on as per non airbag column.

7. The warning light for the airbag will only be illuminated if the battery is reconnected before the airbag is reconnected, in other words don't drive the car without the airbag.

8. Re-assembly is the reversal of these removal guidelines.

Please read above carefully and remember these are only guidelines, if in doubt contact the dealer..

Thanks

I had an air-bag fitted to my Cinq (same steering wheel as Sei) in the back of the steering wheel on the two spokes that connect the wheel to the boss you will see the outline of two little "doors" that allow access to the allen bolts which hold the air-bag in the centre of the wheel, pirse these open with screw driver to gain access to the allen bolts and unbolt the air-bag, you should then find the centre of the the steering wheel will remove easily in one section. I can't remember exactly but once inside the gas discharge system is then held in with a further 3 allen bolts.

HTH,

Aaron.
