Hi,
I was driving to the petrol station today and ran out of fuel about a mile away. I went and got 3 cans of fuel...about 15 litre's. I put the fuel in my car went to start the engine and it didn't start. I kept trying all day but nothing happened....Everything else on the car is in perfect working order. I was told today that there could be some dirt or something which has blocked the pipe which runs from the fuel tank to the engine.
How can i fix this? Is it an easy job or a big problem?
HELP!
Thanks alex

you must be sure it genuinly ran out of petrol.if you can hear the pump priming then the fuel should get there almost immediatly take the air filter off and pour a thimble full of fuel down the t/b with ignition off then try to start it if she starts then dies its a fuel prob

can someone please put me straight on the myth that when you run the tank low you pick up dirt.
dirt sinks not floats so it will allways be at the bottom of the tank even when the tank is full am i right????

Some solid material will float in petrol, and the intake for the pump is at the bottom of the tank and car motion will keep lots of the 'sinking dirt' in suspension.

But there is a filter to protect the pump and the injectors. It needs replacing at its service interval.

I'd suggest not running the car with the low petrol warning light on as intermittent delivery will kill the cat early, cats are expensive to replace.

Up to a point yes, but when the fuel gets right down the suction can begin to draw anything in, including the kack at the bottom of the tank.

my car does this easily now i have mpi (is yours mpi?) but because it runs at 30psi the pump will be compression air while priming and when it stops is pushing the fuel back. to fix it loosen then fuel inlet line going the the throttle body then turn the igniton on. you should hear it hiss. do this till it starts to drip fuel.

had to do it 3 times on my car thanks to running out of fuel fitting the ecu

Iv had the same problem today. Disconneted the fuel pump... took out the inlet line to the TB etc... stil not starting. if i add fuel in the TB directly it starts. Any more ideas?

It happened to me yesterday...but before run to get a new fuel pump for 100 odd quid i thought ill look into it.
Pump didnt work, but i could hear a sort of thumping noise coming out of it.
I then changed the positive and negative wires on the pump ,turn the ignition key...and it WORKED!!!!!! :slayer:
Swapped wires back to normal, put car back together and everything works!!!!

I guess whatever clogged up the pump came out when it rotated backwards...

IT worked for me ,try it before you buy another one!

Wasn't really looking the date to be honest ..
Pump is still running though (y)
