hi hopefully picking up my bravo 1.4 t-jet150 this week i have read a few posts on water pumps and cam belts all seem say same thing ex amount of mileage or 5 years mine will have done 24,000 and its on a 57 plate so 5 years old this time if im under say 40,000 miles when its 5years old should i replace water pump and cam belt or just pump? if both what is the going rate for pump and belt change?

always replace the pump while the belt is off, you can get the parts from shop4parts for about £55 (cambelt/pump) its just the fitting, ive yet to get quotes on the fitting but to service my non turbo with a waterpump and belt fiat wanted £496, £60 of that was water pump

i know you should replace the pump when doing cambelt but could i just change the pump only and change the pump and belt later on when the mileage is higher or do you still run the risk of the belt still snapping?

old car volvo s40 cambelt change should be 5years or 60,000 miles currently on 79,000 9years old and on original belt and pump. main dealer belt only £500 mark

Change the belt. They deteriorate with age . I have not always changed the pump at the same time if the mileage is low . Over eight cars this has never been a problem for me but others would disagree . These days my mileage justifies a pump and belt change together . Make sure the belt tensioner is changed at the same time (it should come as part of a kit). Price depends very much on where you go . My last one was £200 all in but I saw a local VW dealer with a special offer of £500!!for any make. Your selling dealer should really do this as a service item for a car of this age before the sale. Whos supplying this car?

Edit : I just found your earlier thread . I see its got a new belt. Are Ac charging you £250 to get the car to you ? Thats a regular wheeze of theirs. As for Fiat reliability . I have driven Fiats for over 40 years . regularly put over 100k on each one, last one was still running well at 160k, and keep buing them.

If it's already had the cambelt changed without the pump then i'd just leave it as it is until it's next due or if/when the pump starts making strange noises or leaking.

However, if it's not been done yet then i'd ask for the belt AND pump to be done prior to sale & would ordinarily do both, though i don't know of waterpump issues on the petrol Bravo's, just the 150bhp diesel engine. I wouldn't try to do what you've done with the Volvo and go several years beyond the schedule without changing it - you're unlikely to have a happy ending on a Fiat by pushing cambelt intervals THAT much!

As your'e buying from Arnold Clark i'd assume it's got a fairly lengthy warranty anyway, so if the worst does happen & the waterpump goes (which on a T-Jet is unlikely) then i'd just expect them to cough up for not changing it to begin with.

hi thanks for the replys just to let every one know this is what i now so far its on a 57 plate 1 owner 24,000 miles tensioner bet only (no pump or cambelt) changed by AC about 3 weeks ago. i dont know what kind of history comes with the car YET when its in wigan witch should be today/tomorrow i can find out what history it has if any.

AC stand warranty 2 months (i think) extra warranty 1 year=£350 2 year = £445 still wondering if its worth getting

but i will ask them when the car comes in why the tensioner has bin done but not the pump or cambelt and i will see if they will do the cambelt and pump before i take it but i am doubtfull

just to give every one an idear of mileage 36,000 on volvo 3 years ago when i bought it now 79,000 so 43,000 in 3 years and thats just my car never mind company vans and hire cars
