General Diesel Judder??

Car is finally back!!

Dual Mass Flywheel has been replaced, tested and returned.

Drove it home today and so far so good, all symptoms have disappeared. Felt a lot better to drive. Although, having to put up with the Mazda 2 courtesy car for three weeks, it would feel better regardless!

No more replies on this one?

Mine (2009, 28K miles, 165 MJet) does this juddering thing from time to time - usually around the 1400rpm mark - in any gear.

Thought it might be during regens? but I am not sure after reading this thread?

There are two separate sets of problems being discussed in this thread.

Dual Mass Flywheel problems can cause issues on the older 1.9 diesels and this isn't linked to the DPF regen - I believe it's felt more at low speeds.

On the 1.6 and 2.0 diesels there most definitely is an issue with the DPF regen causing very heavy misfiring - there's a whole separate thread about it here.

https://www.fiatforum.com/bravo/208521-bravo-1-6-eco-dpf-problems-misfire.html

If your car is suffering from this it tends to start once you've got the car up to temperature and are driving at speed. You'll notice a loss of power and a misfire that gets worse if you try and accellerate. It was happening about every 100 miles for me. If you turn the engine off and on again it will clear it for a while then restart soon after.

I believe some people have had this fixed with the EGR valve being replaced but others had to have fairly major engine work - they replaced the exhaust valves with a different design referred to by my dealer as Carbon Scraper valves. This is a recognised problem, though some dealers seem to be blissfully unaware.

Thanks for your reply. I suppose since this thread seems to be about 165bhp Multijets I was on the look out for it for this specific model. There is another thread about 165bhp Multijets with DPF problems - but this problem seems to relate to cars running at higher revs and speeds. Mine only occurs at approx 1400rpm but in any gear.

It isn't a loss of power it is just a judder for a couple of seconds which then clears.

As for regens I have no idea when they are happening - I have had 4 Alfas, both the 1.9 JTDm and 2.0 JTDm (equivalent to the Fiat 1.9 and 2.0 Multijets) and I always could tell when they were doing a regen - deeper sound from the exhaust, strong smell of burning, red hot exhaust, decrease in instant consumption. This occurred every tank - about 500 miles or so. In the Bravo, nothing tells me/indicates to me there is a regen occurring?

It is not getting worse or any better at the moment but I think I need to monitor it more closely. Mine is of course out of warranty so I can ill afford major engine repairs.

I know this is a old thread but I hope this helps someone with there judder problem my 1.3 deisel developed a intermittent judder when I was holding a steady speed it was fine while accelerating but running at 30 in 3rd or 4th had a feeling like you were running in to high a gear for the speed I had the egr valve replaced glow plugs replaced and still the judder in the end it appears to have been fixed by changing the fuel filter the old filter looked fine but it appeared to be blocked internally so far the change of filter has fixed the problem I would say to anyone try this first before you start replacing expensive parts like egr or glow plugs which cost me 325 and 64 respectively
