Greetings all.

I have just bought a Brava, It's a '96 1.6 ELX, the remote locking and alarm don't work. I could use some help, the owners manual is rather cryptic and the Haynes manual has very little to say about the alarm.

I put fresh batteries in the remote key and now the little LED on the key blinks when you press the button, but no joy with the alarm.

Reading the owners manual, there's something about 'pairing' the key, so I followed the instructions given- Sat in the car with the doors closed and the ignition off, I pressed the little tiny reset button on the interior light cluster followed by the remote button. The LED on the roof blinked but went out as soon as I pressed the remote.

There is a little keyhole behind the fusebox cover, I don't have a key. The lock is turned to a 3 o'clock position, which I assume from looking at the manual to mean the alarm is active, but I maybe wrong there.

It's only a mildly annoying problem, but I would appreciate any help.

you need to reprogram the remote into the central locking and alarm.

to do this you must have a 4 digit code, usually printed on a paper keyring sticker, usually with the red key, and alarm master keys. since you dont have the alarm master keys i get the feeling you dont have the 4 digit code. do you have the red key?

if you find a 4 digit code try it using the following procedure:

-Press the button that is between your courtesy light and the untrasonic sensors on the roof of your car (near sunroof switch)
-Release the button after a second or two
-After a couple of seconds the LED will flash once
-Enter the first digit of your 4 digit code by pressing the button the relevant number of times
-After a couple of seconds the LED will flash once
-Repeat this for the next 3 digits of the code.

If the code was correct the LED will flash for approximately 10 seconds.
(If the code was incorrect the LED will remain on for 10seconds, so start from the beginning when the LED goes out)

-With the LED flashing press and hold the button on the car and then press and hold the button on the key. Keep them both pressed until the LED stops flashing and remains on.
-Release the button on the remote, then the one on the car.

now what heppens next depends on the age of the car. some cars have a red LED others have a green LED.

for a red LED, if the programming was successful the LED will flash 6 times, but if it was unsuccessful the LED will flash 18 times

for a green LED, if the programming was successful the LED will flash 8 times (i think, maybe less), but if it was unsuccessful the LED will stay on for a few seconds (8 i think?)

if you dont have a 4 digit code to use, try asking at your local fiat dealer, maybe they can supply the code.

i've found a pic of a remote key with the paper sticker still on the keyring (code not shown as on reverse). thats what you need. its easy to see how they go missing.

this is a new key which confirms that each remote key has its own paper code sticker when new. (just like joskejtd said many moons ago and i thought the code was for a car, not a key. well you were right mate (y))

Thanks Jug,

I will have a look through the many scribbles in the handbook and see if there's a 4 digit code written anywhere. I gather it's a trip to the main dealers to get a new code otherwise.

The car came with a red key and one of the blue pair along with the original handbook and a few scraps of service history. No wonder a paper sticker might get lost in ten years and five owners.

Thanks again

Jolly yours is a MK1, therefore chances are the code was never on the keys. I had a 1.8 HLX and i wanted the code card for my car so i contacted Fiat who then had the code card sent to them. On it was all the codes you needed even for both original blue keys for the alarm. Cost £15. But i was told that cars over so many year old they started to throw them away.

I now have a MK2 Bravo and i have one never used blue key with the alarm code sticker still on it.

i have a mk1 and i still have both of my remote key stickers, the paper is starting to feel a bit frail but they're both there. and i have both alarm master keys. and all 3 original keys. and every bit of paper all still in the original document wallet. thats the beauty of previous owners who give a toss. :D
