Just spoken to the garage and have been told the tensioner had let go causing the belt to slip.

Now, would the belt slipping by a few teeth (dont know how far) cause the valves/pistons to interface with each other causing damage.

They are saying no damage was done, I'm not quite so confident.

Help please guys :( :D

Would compression testing show any damage ??

Umm, what I meant was would it still run with valves not sealing properly enough to not know if damage was done.

Esp as the noise I heard from the top end sounded like metal on metal clinking noises.

tbh i would be suprised if no damage was done, even a very slight slip (1 tooth etc) can be fatal

onced fixed, if you find it feels sluggish it probably means there is valve damage causing a loss of compresison. you can do a quick compression test to see what the figures are, if they're lower than expected then you know you have valve damage.

if the tensioner nut came loose the slightly slack belt would put the timing out, but that does not mean it slips at all, often the tension is only lost and no slipping occurs. in cases like that it is not uncommon to get away without any damage at all, so maybe you'll be lucky.

They said something about the tensioner coming loose. SWMBO has been talking to them, I am getting too annoyed to be rational.
