Hello all,

Please excuse me, I'm a newbie here.

My sister has managed to cook her 1996/N Bravo 12v 1.4 (I've been reading the forum and now realise this is probably the worst engine out there, but still!)

It looks like she's warped the head, and before getting it skimmed, I have a few questions...

1. What is the order / tension required when fitting the head bolts?

2. Are these engines fussy about replacing head bolts on a head change?

3. Where on earth is the cam shaft marker for it's home position? (Can't find it for the life of me!)

Any help would be appreciated?

Henry

i've changed the head bolts on every head i've ever removed. they dont cost much so why cut corners. while the head's off you might as well clean up the oil flinger bar and flush the oil ways out, that should keep the 1.4 going well for a good while.

if you're getting the head skimmed i'd also get it pressure tested first, no point skimming and fitting a cracked head, they tend to get hairline fractures when warping occurs and they're hard to spot without a pressure test.

dont know if there's a mark for the camshaft, most fiats dont sem to have markings for anything :bang: but you could just watch the tappets moving with the rocker cover removed. iirc the inlet and exhaust valves will be 'rocking' on cylinder 3 when piston 1 is at TDC. when the rocking pair are level its set for refitting. check haynes to make sure they should be rocking on clylinder 3, but thats what i'd usually do if there's no markings.
