Hi Steven,
Bravos fall into Mk1 and Mk2 production categories. I think the Mk1 production ceased around 1999 (not sure) A few things changed for the better and worse.
a Mk1 1.8 16v would be a Mk2 115 16v. The Mk1 HGT was rebadged to say 155 16v (just behind the front wheel arch). Mk1 had the CD changer cable preinstalled and waiting for the changer, Mk2 does not. Mk2 HGT has Aircon as standard. Mk1 had a 1.4 12v gas guzzler, experimental engine that got dropped in favour of the 1.2 16v engine that returned the same results but with better economy as Mk2.
The lines are blurred as to what exactly changed between the categories, but i think FIAT made the changes slowly in order to deplete stock components that make up the cars.
Buy the 155, newer technology and revised bits mean it will be a better buy, but not by much. Not sure if you already drive a FIAT, but do make sure you get one with all the keys (x3 including the burgundy Master key) and if it is over 3 years old or done 48K miles or more that the timing belt and tensioner have been changed. This is really important.
Hope this helps,
