Hi,

I am soon going to be having some engine work done to my 1.6 hlx.

New piston rings, small inrease in compression, cylinder head flowed, 3 angle valve seats, and the cam reprofiled by Kent cams, crank and flywheel balanced.

I have just had the car on the rolling road so I can do a before and after comparison.

This shows though how good the 1.6 motor is as stock. It is only supposed to make 103 horsepower at the crank, my car (nearly 90,000 miles on the clock) which has had no tuning so far apart from a K&N filter is making 108.5hp @5350rpm, 109.4 ft/lb torquw @ 4946rpm.

I can't wait to drive it after

I wonder what she will make, anyone got any idea's / guesses?

Is there any chance you are getting new lifters/tappets when you are getting your cams done??

Im just curious what sort of money it would cost to rebuild one of the 1.6 heads. Mines got only 137,000km on it and im pretty sure the whole top end is shot. Be curious to see if the motor is worth saving or just throw something else in it instead.

I once had a 124 and spent a lot of cash on a built 2ltr for it after the 1608 blew up. After i got the 2ltr in it i pretty much regretted it. Torque was good but the way the 1608 revved and the noise it made was completely different.
Thats one thing i like in the 1.6 in the bravas to. Rev well and go pretty hard for what they are.

I reckon the ultimate combo for one would be a matched turbo, standardish compression and maybe drysumped or something similar to get around the oiling problem they have. Plenty of revs and bit more snot. :)

Good luck with the motor :)

Well, she gone in for surgery now.

Should have the car back in a couple of weeks, depending on how quickly Kent Cams take to do the cam re-profile.

Well, I went down to take a look at the progress yesterday.

The motor is apart, and the head was being ported as I watched. The cam is away at kent cams for re-profiling.

We decided not to go down the route of balancing the crank and flywheel, as on inspection the bottom end of the motor is mint, so not worth disturbing.

Hopefully it should be back together by the end of next week.

There is a guy on the turbo124 site that reckons he will see 200 hp out of a 1.6 16 valve thats naturally aspirated, He has done alot of head work and made it flow well, different cams and alot of other bits. Pretty serious numbers out of 1.6 :).

that pretty decent that. i had my 1.6 rolling roaded 2 weeks ago these were my results

Wow, 124bhp is a great result. Hopefully I should get my car back this week. Then back on the rolling road next week.

I am hoping for 120.

im more than hapopy with the 124.7, its the torue im over welmed with, 134..thats awsome. shame the weight puts it down, all the mods to the interior and exteriro gave it alot of weight! im still hoping for cas but at £500 id rather buy a hgt and turbo it!

Well, I got the car back yesterday and have only done a few miles in it.

The work certainly seems to have made an improvement. The cam has caused the tickover to be a little bit lumpy, but I guess there is always a trade off for more performance.

Reading the manual, also it says the ECU can take a while to learn its best settings, and the car does seem to be getting better the more it is driven.

Back to the dyno some time next week to end the guesswork.

ideally you need a map to suit your new mods, i wonder if FC Performance would have a go at it for you?

Well, the car has been on the dyno, and the results are strange.

The car has according to the dyno, lost 5bhp.

Its wierd though, as the car going up a piece of private road I use for testing is consistently about 6 or 7mph faster.

The car has definatly lost low down, but as I said, is faster when it gets going a bit.

I am now looking into the a piggyback ecu system with a custom map.

I have had a quote from Redline Tuning - Basildon of £450 for a Dastek Unichip and map to suit the car. I should think this would help the motor as the standard ECU doesn't seem to like the cars current setup.

Has anyone had any experience of the Unichip, or any feedback on Redline Tuning?

Are there any other piggyback units worth trying?

(The std ECU is not flash re-mappable at all)

i would seriously talk to FC Performance before you part with your cash.

i'm sure the 1.6 has a bosch ECU, and they will be able to create a fully live mapped chip for you, the ECU is more than capable of managing the fuel/ignition, it just needs setting up properly for your mods.

http://www.fcperformance.co.uk/

i wouldnt expect the cost to be anywhere near £450.
