I recently had the misfortune to have the fuel pump stop working. OK - I got a 2nd hand one eventually. Unfortunately it had been exposed to the elements and the nut which holds the breather pipe elbow to the pump body was seized and the only way of sorting things was to cut off the old remnant of breather pipe.
I've managed to (eventually) get the plastic ring nut undone and swapped over the pump bodies ok. All was reconnected ok with the exception of the blue breather pipe connection. The pump works fine and the engine runs again without any problems.
The big problem is how do I get the existing blue breather pipe onto the pump body elbow? It appears to be a heat shrink pipe so my usual idea of heating it up to make it pliable isn't a good one. I've tried brute force and ignorance but that doesn't work. I did see a hint on the web about using point nosed pliers to gently make the diameter of the pipe bigger enough to push onto the elbow but I just couldn't make sufficient difference without risking breaking the existing pipe. I did try washing up liquid but that didn't seem to make any difference. It would help if there was bit more working room as well.....
Any ideas or thoughts please?

have you tried putting the pipe in hot water???? it'll soften it and won't blow up!!!(y) dunno how soft though as i never seen the pipe!

but it works on some of the plastic pipes we use at work

Thanks for that suggestion. Oddly enough I went out to the car this afternoon to try that very thing. As there wasn't sufficient room to get a small cup of hot water even close to the pipe I wrapped the end of the pipe in a rag which was soaked in boiling water. I tried 2 mins, 5 mins and 10 mins soaking but none of those times worked. I was wondering if I just taped the 2 ends together with amalgam tape would work?
