hello

Last Friday night, my car Fiat marea was a victim of vandalism. Someone at the middle of the night made scratches on the bonnet (star shape) and on the passenger side from front end to rear end.I was frustrated. :bang:

On the bonnet, scratches are rather deep, showing underlying coating.

Can anyone please offer advice on repairing these? can I try myself? if so, please advise me, please. I found a local auto paint shop. But today(sunday), it's close.

Any idea about cost in body shop?

thank you very much

You could always try a touch up kit from halfords and then T cut it after the paint's hardened (after a fortnight) to blend in the new paintwork. Would cost about a tenner to buy the kit IIRC.

thank you for your support, chaos.
Today, Halfords sale assistant said that as key scratch is long, it not good with tough up kit, but it should be professioanal job.

so I got to 2 body shops to check price. The first one asked me £400. he explained he needed to spray whole bonnet and whole passenger side. the second man's price is £390 with same plan. He also said if i tried touch up kit, it would be darker.

My car is metalic color.

Could you provide me some idea?
Should I need to claim to my insurance company or should I try my self with tough up kit.

many thanks.

Hmm...tell you what. Let me see some pics up of the damage. In some cases it may be better to respray the side, but it wouldn't necessarily be darker. IME the touch up kits are quite accurate colour wise. Oh as it's metallic, don't forget to use lacquer afterwards!
Could always try a spray can, but it would be more noticeable. I reckon t-cutting would be your best bet still after touch up. If you do the job well enough, it is barely noticeable.

TBH, its up to you. Personally I wouldn't claim - it depends how much your premium would increase due to loss in NCB (unless its protected NCB ;) )

Hi chaos

Today, I bought paint, lacquer, grey primer, sand paper block from hardfords.

any advice please! My plan is:
> I will clean the surface with ?water and wax.Let it dry.
>I will apply prima in defect area
>waiting for 24 hours
>smooth with sand paper block
>I will apply paint, 2-3 layers
>when dry, I will apply lacquer
>after a fortnight, I will do T cut job.

Am I right?

Do the scratches go to bare metal? If they do you would need to put a rust inhibitor on first. Looking at the pictures it doesn't seem to be the case. I hope you didn't buy aerosols, but a proper touch up kit. There are instructions written on the kit with regards to the whole procedure and the paint/primer's drying time, so I would follow them. I wouldn't use water to clean the area. just a tack rag. But what you've said is about right. Just follow the instructions and don't rush it. If you're unsure about anything, just put up a post.

Hope this helps

Hi chaos

2 days ago, I started the paint job. Prima and single layer of paint on the bonnet. And then, I had to stop becuae of rain.

This everning, I rubbed and felt the painted surface. I noticed the scratch lines are still lower than surrounding normal area. I mean they are something like shallow trench. I think I used primer inadequately.

May I know your suggestion? Do I have to fill with more primer and sand to get an absolutely even surface before painting again? If so, do i have to remove the single layer of paint I have already applied?

Somewhere in this forum, I think you advised someone who didn't have match paint to use T cut to clean.

Sorry , I have made many questions.

many thanks

I would fill the 'trench' with more paint until it is level, then lacquer it. And yes, I would use T Cut to try and even out any colour differences you may see.

If you take it to a bodyshop get them to quote you for a mop it'll be cheaper than a respray & you might find that some of the scratches will dissappear & the deeper ones won't be so noticeable. Be warned though a mop will still cost for the bonnet & complete side around £60. (y) I really wouldn't bother with touch-up pens as they're really only ment for stone chips.

god damn vandals!,

last night my cinq was treated to some key scratches down one side, its not too deep but down to the undercoat and metal at some points. Was gonna try to t-cut it see whats left tand then use the touch up/t-cut procedure said above. Its broom yellow so shouldnt be too tricky, is it best i put a rust inhibitor on the surface too?, can i get this from halfords?

thanks,

nath

nah, its a fresh scratch, jus dont want it to rust, once it starts it wont stop!

If there's no rust don't bother with an inhibitor they don't work anyway. If you have a touch up pen then paint some in immediately that way you keep the weather out. I'm afraid the only option to get it looking as it was is to have it resprayed though. How many panels did the b*****ds go down?

They done the passenger door and rear quarter panel, about 2ft long, will have to get some quotes for re-spray at some point. There has been alot of vandalism to mine and my housemates cars over the last few months so wont get it repaired until i'm finished uni and at home where the car is on a drive!,

i have a touch up paint so will get to it one day soon,

thanks
