I went back to see the crash site and the car yesterday. I'm even more shocked after that. The pictures might not capture the fact that there is not a single unharmed part of the car. The picture shows the place where the car was headed directly to a tree. Just before that it flipped over and flew a couple of meters. That was the good part...

We drove past a very bad accident on the Windsor bypass today. Not sure what happened but fairly sure there was a fatality judging by the number of police on scene, the attendance of the TRL accident investigation unit and car being shielded by police. All of the cars on the scene looked new so it just goes to show it's all about luck!

I found out what happened this weekend;

'Fatal road traffic collision – Windsor

Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist died following a road traffic collision in Windsor on Sunday (30/3).

At approximately 5.05pm, a black Yamaha R1 motorcycle joined the A332 Windsor and Eton relief road from the slip road at the junction with the A308 Maidenhead Road. As the vehicle travelled northbound, the rider lost control and came off his bike, colliding with roadside furniture in the central reservation.

The motorcyclist was taken to Wexham Park Hospital, but died shortly after arrival.

Officers investigating the incident are keen to trace the driver of a sports car that is believed to have been in the vicinity of the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Amy Lewis of Taplow Roads Policing on 0845 8 505 505.

Note to editors: A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently on bail pending further inquiries.'

Motorbikes :(

Gives me a chill sometimes thinking about how many of my mates are getting into them and just how unsafe you are on one compared to being in a car.

dont get me started on that...

they should hang all those tin-can drivers who go "sorry, didnt see ya there, mate"

what is NOT to notice about a 6 feet, 200 pounds leather clad, bright orange reflective vest, full beam headlights on bike.. and the biker staring you straight in the face..., just moment before you decide that you'll pull out and cross the road a lot faster that this bike can arrive?

same as for those that will try to outaccellerate me just before turning in a sideroad without indicating first... surprise for you mate... i can do 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.. can your car do that?

I agree with both sentiments, car drivers are often ignorant to the biker as they are looking for cars, buses, trucks etc so although they may see the bike it does not register as a vehicle. Not making excuses for bad driving but I am sure that everyone on here has had a 'oop's that was bloody close' moment at some point in their driving careers.

That said, I think there is also an issue with inexperienced riders buying powerful bikes and not being able to control them.

My brother in law used to Police the Box Hill area of Surrey which is the South of England hot spot for bikers. Most of the fatalities he attended (which happen frequently through the summer months), were to middle aged men who had bought powerful bikes despite not having ridden for years. The reason for it being middle aged men is put down to the fact that they hit an age where they finally have disposable income again after years of brining up family and paying hefty mortgages. They used to ride bikes in the teens and early 20's and hanker for the 'good old days' when they were able to jump on their 125's and tear up the highway, difference is they go and buy 1000cc+ bikes and their experience and reactions are just not up to the bikes capabilities.

it is true that a lot of fatalities are happening on bikes both in the UK and the rest of Europe. Firstly because of the ignorance and the constant "fight" for dominating the road between the sardine can drivers (cars) and wannabe Ghost Riders (people on motorbikes). By 2009 they will install another 6000 fixed cameras in Britain maybe this will keep them safer.

As for me, I'm a biker myself I have a pilot license since I have been part of a team in the 125cc WSB season in 2007. Now I have quit racing mostly because the astronomic costs I wasn't able to cover and secondly because I have to study. Now I own a 2002 Kawasaki Ninja 1000cc. It's a beast and it won't forgive a new rider. VERY hard to tame. whenever I ride it I am constantly aweare of other participants to traffic especially on fast roads outside town. It is indeed a very dangerous passion but STILL I think Britain is safer when it comes to biking than Romania. This is because there are always tracks avaliable where bikers can go ride their two-wheeled rockets to the max......AND NOT ON THE ROAD. and there are whole more bikes in the UK than here. PS: the previous owner of my bike did 200mph+ I don't want to try that untill I'm on an airport runway lol

Now....for the scavenging... That gear knob of yours - is it for sale? ;) Front fog lights? That lid thingie on the driver's seatbelt enclosure? ...:)
