General 500l diesel

General 500l diesel

I dont think there is 2.2 diesel in Orlando. But its definetly not Fiat engine.
Fiat own the rights to the GM diesel engine. If fitted with a GM diesel engine likely to be Fiat unit. Just look at the engine numbers on any Vauxhall or Saab. There are all Fiat,

The 500L is a big car, I really think fiat have missed the mark with engine choices, they could have given the engines a bit more oomph but have stuck to emissions figures, I'm pretty sure non of the engines would give you much satisfaction when towing a van, I think you'd just be leading a very long traffic jam.

From what I understand the American market will get much better engine choices with more power including rumours of the 500L getting the abarth turbo engine, and the only reason for the EU engines, seems to be fiat fighting to keep their reputation for low emissions at the cost of what the customers want

Would be interesting to see what the XL and trekking offer

I am led to believe there is no road tax in America which again could well provide the answer to why we are seeing smaller engined cars here in the UK?

I liked the 1.6 diesel but would avoid the 1.4 petrol.

I'm sure you're right about American road tax they do however have pretty strict emissions laws.

I think the 1.6 multijet could have been a better engine option, other manufactures are getting better figures with 1.6 diesel engines. they could have given the customer the choice of more power at the cost of road tax, if thats what the customer wants, especially in this big family car. I think it boils down to fiat wanting to retain their low emission status in Europe and continue to be leaders in low CO2 especially with all the other low emission cars about now

I could handle the 1.6 diesel but not in 105 hp form.Minimum i need 120hp.Ive seen the figures on the 1.6 diesel in 120hp form and its bloody impressive.240 lbs ft torque.Thats more than my 140 hp stilo had from 1.9 litres.
This is what angers me about Fiat, they let them selves down with this crap.It doesnt compare with a vw sharan, etc purely because of the engine choice. In the next 12 months its going to leave me in a prediciment. In all honesty if it had had the right spec engine i would have bought one 2 months ago when i bought the wife another new 500.Do they want to sell cars or what?

Given some of the engine choices offered in other Fiats, i'm a bit surprised they even offered the 1.6 Multijet. When the Qubo was launched for example, it had just the 1.4 8v 77bhp petrol and 1.3 Multijet with 75bhp. It wasn't for quite some time after that the 95bhp Multijet got added.

It would've done no harm to 500L sales for them to offer the 120bhp 1.6, or even a 2.0, but they're probably looking at their CO2 record & don't want to lose their top position in the car market for low CO2

I think if you want more power the two options in the Fiat range are the Bravo as mentioned (though the engine range is being scaled back on that now) or the new Doblo which has the 2.0 135bhp Multijet if you go for Eleganza spec.

Alternatively hang fire for the 500XL or 500X and see if stronger engines are offered with those.

Yep that sums it up.Test drove a new Doblo,i liked it.Wife didnt but that doesnt matter much to me.135 hp,im going backwards. The industry benchmark is now 140hp.Its time they open their eyes and offered the options.I was hopeing the Freemont would appear with the latest FPT/VM joint venture 3litre diesel.I dont think so.

I visit Fiat delare today and I take a look on 500l. It is really huge! Everyone said it is, but until I see it, I didnt think is so huge. Materials for me ok, plenty of space. I like it. Agree that engines are, well :bang: They should put 2.0 140BHP in it, and no problem. Engine they have, so I dont see any problem. But car is (y)

go find a 159 2.4 in a scrap yard shouldn't be that difficult to convert the croma to a 6 speed gearbox and surely still cheaper than some of your options

Sadly the croma is not as good as you think it should be.They are a genuine 200hp engine, mine is a tad more due to the steinbauer p box.I seen 240 odd on the rolling road.385lbs ft torque too. They are severly hampered with a top gear ratio that equates to 60mph at 1200rpm.When towing a van its a ball bag.It will spot a hill from 10 mile away and drop down the box which severly anoys me especially considering the size of the engine. All this i think is down to a gearbox that can only cope with 350lbs ft of torque-the assin.I regulary feel the throttle pedal being "taken away from me in top" presumably the torque limiter in the box comming in to play.
I still think my old 140 hp jtd stilo would have licked it after it had been chipped,if only some one had made a solid flywheel for her at the time. This is one reason why i would have liked the L with the 2.0 litre in it and a manual box.Why not put it as an option, cant get me head round them at times.
Its not a small car even.more like the size of a sharan.for people like me a 2.0litre is the norm.Shame because i love it.

Why dont you find a 2.4 159 that's breaking and convert the croma to a 6 speed gearbox?

I never thought of that.Could it be done? But then i,d have a dmf to contend with.Nah cant be bothered.

Not interested in towing I'm afraid ;), but my Doblo has the same 1.6 Diesel and that has a mass of mid range torque, and the 500L with the latest Euro 6 variant has even more torque (and better economy), so with careful use of the gearbox it should be great fun.

This engine is very sweet and refined.

I doubt many people will want to tow more than a bit of garden rubbish to the dump in a car like this.

That might be the case, but i do want to tow my caravan for my holidays. Its got a tow limit of 1300kg so it is type aproved for it.The car is plenty big enough. But the spec is crap, why not offer a 2litre everyone else does.If it wasnt for the 500 fiat would be dead. This is a leap into the full size car world again, offer a full size engine to go with it.

I had the 1.6 diesel Bravo eco 105hp and the engine was brilliant. Easily acheived 60 mpg+. I probably never used all of the horses, it felt fast to me if I put my foot down (hardly ever).

Went for the TwinAir this time as:

  • Very similar economy (maybe 6.5% worse)
  • Fuel 3.5% cheaper
  • So only ~3% more to run the TwinAir
  • Will be doing shorter journeys more often and less mileage overall (NB The diesel took 15 miles to warm up in winter, with no PTC heater in the Bravo it means you are freezing your balls off for 30 minutes, esp if you have to drive with the window open for the first 5 minutes when its -15C and 6AM to help stop the screen misting up from your breath!)
  • Car £1000 cheaper (or 726 litres of unleaded!)
  • Torque allot less but still more than the car I have been driving whilst waiting for the 500L and I've not noticed a lack of it TBH..
It's no good for towing a caravan agreed (unless you get a very small one, there are allot of 1000kg caravans these days as they try and tap into everyday car drivers - people don't want to change their car to pull a caravan!).
