First post so I hope a little story is ok. About a week ago the radio in my wife's 2010 500 stopped working. After some searching, it pointed to the fuse. I tried to get it out of the little dash compartment but ended up pulling the under dash shelf out. That's when I noticed the little block on the right (airbag ECU?) was a little loose.

I didn't think anything of it and just tightened the nut. put it all back together and started the car. Airbag warning, fuel cut off unavailable and start/stop unavailable all came on every time the car was started. Nothing else in the car was affected...oh and the radio works now :) )

This was late on a Sunday night and the car was important for Tuesday. No choice but the dealer. £701 later, new ECU and the car really runs like a top. I don't know if the loose component I found was causing noise on the CAN bus or if it was interacting with other things.

It was painful as it was fine (I guess to a point) before I jacked around with the shelf. I've read on like that you can get one of these for MUCH less but my question is about the syncing it to the rest of the bus. I've heard that purchasing and installing a new one is easy but unless you sync the new one to the other computers, you'll always have problems. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Oh and any idea about what to do with the old ECU I made them give me?

I’ve done loads of them and could have sold you one for £95. You just need a proxy alignment which can be done in MES for free or fiat will do it for an expensive fee.

To do almost anything on a modern car you need computer bsed diagnostics. This includes seting up new airbag ECU or resetting the service info. Fortunatly for us with Fiats we have Multiecuscan. This can be downloaded from www.multiecuscan.net. You can play with the free version without leads or connecting to the car by clicking on the simulate button instead of connect.

A dealer would likely test the ECU in situ, discover a lack of a proper "reading"... order/fit a new one.. and then synchronise it.

The removal/refit alone might have solved the problem but if the dealer ordered a new part and it turned up promptly, they wouldn't faff about since a failure to fix it by fiddling about would end up on the customer's bill. They would be more likely to be "risk averse", just fit a new one and Roberto is your mother's brother.

The old one might still work, so worth getting tested if it's not going to cost much... then either keep it or sell it, if it's any good.
