Hi everyone, a newbie here.

I've recently got myself a Fiat 500 Pop and I've encountered a strange problem. If I don't use my car for a few days, I find when I do use it, the speedometer doesn't show the correct speed I'm doing.

We've had some hot weather lately which I know can drain the battery, is the speedometer connected to the battery? After doing a long(ish) journey, the next day the speedo seems to be back to normal.

Can anyone tell me what I should do to fix this?

I imagine the spline that the needle is on is getting stuck. For £30 you can get yourself a replacement speedo on eBay if it's bothering you that much.

Thanks for the reply. If what you've said is the problem, wouldn't it get stuck all the time?

And yeah, this problem is bothering me, call me old fashioned but I believe in sticking to the speed limit, which is hard to do when your speedo's not working properly.:D

If it's gunged up for some reason maybe the fact that your leaving it for a while just allows it to get stuck a bit more and presumably eventually frees itself.

It could also I suppose be an electrical fault within the mechanism. Either way, I think the only way to fit it would be to get a replacement.

Easy to fit, takes about an hour. Make sure you get one with lower mileage than your car though. You can up the mileage but not reduce it.

If you have a satnav, or a smartphone with a GPS, it's actually quite easy.

This isn't recommended as an alternative to fixing the problem, but it may be of use in the interim.

If you do get stopped for speeding, don't offer your non-working speedo as an excuse, as this would imply you have committed a second offence under the construction and use regulations.

I find the speedo so hard to read, especially on bright, sunny days, that I've given up trying to use it. I fitted a GPS HUD speed display - it's more accurate and I don't have to take my eyes off the road.
