Technical Brand new Fiat, windscreen wipers skipping and loud

So it was with some degree of trepidation that we used the wipers for the first time on our new 500. Ours don't do it at all - yes they do bounce a little when the screen is only slightly wet, probably the same as most cars,

Correction
Just got back from an 80km trip in the 500 and it rained on and off for a lot of if. Some medium, some drizzle and some just road spray.
Wipers were on low speed or intermittent - didn't need high speed
Wipers worked perfectly - no "bouncing" or skipping, no problem at all.
Car has only been washed with "wash'n wax" with no special attention to the windscreen, apart from chamois :)

If memory is correct, the wiper blades on the Fiat are the same as those on our Skoda Yeti and they work perfectly.

Checked and they are identical - no idea what brand they are - meaning there is no brand on them, just a square release button but I guess that is pretty standard anyway
Anyway, both DO work as expected, for what it is worth

Exactly. I think a few of the 500s troubles are that it's heavily based on the 2004 Panda, which was built down to a price as it sold cheap (especially when first launched, £8000 for a top spec Eleganza), and I suppose in Fiats defence they weren't to know the 500 would be able to take multiple price hikes and still sell like hot cakes so I guess they thought they'd better go steady on expensive parts so as to still make a profit. Now we're left feeling slightly short-changed in certain areas (wipers, suspension, tailgate release to name a few) because we've got £7000 car parts on a £10-£13k car.

Doesn't let them off the hook with the door handles or boot wiring mind you, since neither of those affected the Panda  Even the wipers weren't too bad on the Panda but they used (at least initially) the rigid ones rather than the floppy blades used today.

What is most poor is that they're now well aware of how much more a 500 sells for over a Panda, but instead of spending a bit more so as to make a good car perfect, they've carried on churning them out with the same niggles - the leather seats is one of the only things where I've seen a quality improvement since launch, though I may be wrong of course. Even though the important bits (engines, gearboxes etc) actually seem very good, these niggles really don't inspire confidence on the longevity of the car & would make a less clued up punter think if they've screwed up the wipers, what else is about to pack-up.
Oh well, at least the spare parts are cheap if something goes wrong = )

Seat fabrics, hatch wiring, door handles, mirrors, wipers & washers are all more durable on the Mk3 Panda than the 500 lounge  :bang:.

The 500 (& the Mini) are proof positive that fashion sells. For 500 money, there are far better built & engineered cars out there (the Swift, for one).

Wow thanks everyone! Very helpful, the dealer said the same - that they're just new and will get better. Have been wasting the windscreen washing liquid and it seems to be improving.

On another note, I noticed one of the reversing lights wasn't working and mentioned it when talking to my dealer.... who said Fiat's are only meant to have one reversing light
Thing is there seems to be one on the opposite side it just doesn't light up, and that seems a rather strange design, why not put a second light in that space that seems to be made for it or if you're only gonna have one why not put it in the middle not near the indicators??

It is very common only to have one reversing light. The other side will house the rear fog light. Many cars do it this way - you don't need that much light when reversing.

In Germany it is illegal to have two rear fog lights, and maybe reversing lights too, I can't remember.

So many makers adopt the German rule and fit one only. I think the rear fog has to be on the offside, for obvious reasons.

The reason is sensible, two rear fogs on can 'overwhelm' the standard rear lights, making normal brake lights harder to notice in bad weather. One bright red light at the back is clear enough and doesn't conflict with the rear lights.

Our local dealer swapped the wipers under warranty as they said it was a known issue and that the replacement blades had a different treatment in the rubber to prevent the juddering.

They said that they used to replace them with Ford branded ones from the KA until the correct versions came from Fiat.

thanks, it is the rear fog light, I didn't pay for front ones so its the only one I have lol I didnt think it exisited

You live in Australia, you'll hardly ever see fog anyway, not like in the UK. One does us just fine here anyway :)

I have the exact same problem with my wipers. I thought someone had just put some dodgy blades on it - wait, they did, it was Fiat!

Will have to invest in some new ones as one of them has now split due to it constantly getting stuck on the screen when the wipers are first switched on.

Would I be best getting Bosch ones?

Got the bosch wipers on our 500,
The original stock ones on our 58 car were still on there last year when
we bought it and they juddered like crazy. How anyone can expect
the original wipers to last over 4 years I'll never know.
Excellent servicing Fiat... Not! You missed a trick there too as the dozy
cow who owned ours before us would have paid for new ones every year.
(She was one of those... You know what I mean. I have an entry on a receipt
of hers for £13.85 to refill her screen wash. OMG. They must have seen her coming)
Swapping them out for bosch aerotwins was the first thing I did to the car.
I've always put a new set of bosch wipers on every year on every
vehicle I have. They aren't expensive from places like ECP especially with
free delivery and I like my wiper function quiet .

How do you know she didn't have them replaced by fiat with OEM ones?
I have every single receipt and full dealer history just 20k on it when I
got it, she was a dealers wet dream. Finance deal, got everything done at
main agent workshop, never questioned a bill, got rid after 4 years pxing it
for another the same.

Got her name/address from the log book before agreeing a sale and wrote to her.
She phoned me and we had a good chat about the car.
She was a widow of about 60 years old, car was garaged most of its life,
she just went to the shops in it and the odd trip visiting family.

They were never renewed, just like the cam belt or brake fluid.
IMO on a 4 year old car these should have been done. Regardless of
mileage. (She did about 5k a year. But the receipts I have and some of the
things she was charged for made it so I'd never trust them to do anything.
That's before we get on to the silly prices. £62 for some copper core
spark plugs LOL
I can get the OEM iridium ones for my Audi for less than that.

My point is if they had said 'Mrs X we need to do your cambelt/wiperblades/brakefluid etc'
she would have just said 'OK do it.' And IMO these are safety related maintenance items too.
So no, I'd not trust Fiat to take care of my car. I have a decent mechanic for that.
