General Scrappage scheme with the 500?

Because who is going to pay full price for a Panda when there are other cars which are cheaper after discount?

so why would you pay full price for the 500 given the scheme, and the resulting impact on competitors?

I personally wouldn't and I'm not going to. But if I didn't have an old banger and I really wanted a 500 then I guess I'd have little choice.

I think that whilst Fiat possibly are making a killing on the 500, they don't need to discount it. Its only been out over here for a year & is shifting in good numbers without much, if any incentive. The factory can hardly keep up as it is so why would they cause themselves more bother by reducing it?

The Panda is being discounted because it's been in the UK since late 2003 & by this stage in a models lifecycle, most manufacturers would have to offer some incentive to buy them. Whilst i recognise you guys are smarter than the average & know a 500 is basically a Panda in a posh frock, the average buyer sees a 500 as a totally different & newer car & will therefore pay more for it.

Mini are discounting, but they need to. Mini sales have dropped crazily since the 500 was launched, probably coz its majorly overpriced. And if you think Fiat is profitting on the 500, how much must BMW have raked in on the Mini?

Afterall, the Mini can't cost THAT much more to make against a 500, on account of the crap steering motors that are now dropping like flies according to Watchdog, and the numerous other failures that mates of mine with Minis have reported, including headgasket failures & engine rebuilds.

If Fiat were wise, theyd do the Scrappage scheme on the Panda, Grande Punto & Bravo, and possibly the Doblo, Sedici & Multipla, tho most of their discounts work out cheaper than the Scrappage scheme anyway.

The 500 & Qubo doesnt need discounting as they are already cheaper than rivals & are fairly new to the market.

I'm sure I read in one of the threads that a 500 owner had been contacted by his dealer regarding collection of his car. If he wanted it now it would be the agreed price but if he was willing to wait then he would be offered the scrappage discount.

Sorry I haven't got the link to the post but I will find it later if no-one else does so in the meantime.

Found it!

Hey Yall

Well I was so excited was due to pick up my new car on sat until Mr Darling made his car scrapping scheme announcement in the budget.

Dealer called me this morning saying if I wait till mid May then I can get £2000 for my old motor rather than £500. It made sense at the time I said "ok!".

Now I wish I hadn’t, I've already waited 12 weeks!! ARGHHHHHHH!! :bang:

Yeah I did read that. Sounds promising do just hope it's not just a dealer jumping the gun. Looking forward to ordering a car soon.Hopefully it's a 500.....

Me too it’s my car!!!

I have my suspicious as the scheme would mean the dealer doesn't have to pay the part ex price for my vehicle so it makes sense for them to tell me to wait. However the dealer seemed fairly convinced the 500 will be included. I think fiat may take the hit on the 500 just to get the rest of the range selling again. Assuming of course they have to offer the scheme on their full range!

Why dont you just ring your dealer, or customer service?

Have done. Response was along the lines of "we don't have full details about the scheme yet, but will let you know when we know" kinda thing.

This is despite them having details on their website, and a list of cars covered by the scheme, including Panda Eco, Mazda 2's (including Sport), Grande Punto's, and Bravo's. They're a Mazda dealer too. Notice the missing 500.

It doesn't look to me like they've chosen the greenest cars of the range. If they had, I would've thought it would include the 500, wouldn't you?

Just contacted Fiat directly, via their online chat service, and this is how it is:

The only Fiat currently supported by the scheme is the Panda, as advertised on their website.

They haven't yet received full details about the scheme from Fiat HQ yet, and will do so on the 18th May.

The information will be available on their website, presumuably at: www.fiat.co.uk/scrappage

So we just have to wait and see...

That's pretty weak. I spoke to someone today who said details would be available shortly. I understand they don't know right now but the middle of may is just rubbish. Might get onto my dealer but don't want to take up too much of his time as he's a nice guy and he's usually busy/

Many manufacturers have started this scheme already, and across the whole range too.
However, Ive just heard smart are not including all their models but Mercedes are, so it would seem that they CAN choose to leave models out.

Well Smart are technically a different manufacturer aren't they?

Not any more they arent, both smart and Mercedes are wholey owned by Daimler AG.
smart used to be a seperate entity but was losing so much money that Daimler took total control and put all of it under the Mercedes banner. Hence why smarts are now sold in Merc dealers... and its smart with a little s not a big one.
