Tank capacity is 35L. How can someone put 37L in it???
Are petrol stations lying to us?!?

When I fill up I ignore the pump shut off and fill right to the brim, I know this is not a good idea since when the fuel expands it has nowhere to go but since I've often a 20 mile trip from the garage I reckon I'll use up a few litres.

Still....that doesn't explain it.
35L of tank and at best 1L in tubes.

Just out of interest, when I passed my driving test my dad told me to carry 5L of fuel in a can in the boot. I haven't done so for years now, does anyone still carry fuel? Hubbie says he never has done and looked at me as if slightly odd (he does this quite often now!)xxxxx

I wouldnt personally. Especially if its a plastic petrol can. Changes in temperature, etc, could compromise the can over time. Fuel expands, etc.

I believe Diesel isn't such a worry though, as Diesel vapour doesnt ignite so easily.

I still wouldn't though. Get a basic RAC/AA plan instead, and try not to let your tank get too empty.

Well the car said 65 miles in the 'range' when I filled up this morning and I got just over 30 litres into it so I guess 5L left in the tank when the piccie shows half a quarter of a tank left ... well in my car anyway. Now got to work out how many miles is 5litres .... anyone help with the conversion factor? I am averaging overall 50mpg. thanks.

can someone go fill up as soon as the light comes on for each of the engines - brim it with a second shot of fuel after the first cut off (but not on full) so we know how much in litres you can get in. That way we will know how much you can fill it with at that point which will give an indication of how much is left.

OK, I got to the garage with 31 miles on the range indicator and got 35.28 litres in so I'm guessing about 2.5 litres (0.5 gallon) remaining when it beeps at you at 30 miles.

I'm still confused as to how the range is predicted. The reason I say that is because I would have thought that the car would take the "average" mpg figure it has credited you with (in my case 51.2mpg over the last 1200 odd miles) and multiplied that by the tank capacity (for the sake of argument 7.8 gals). This would give me a range of 400 miles with a full tank but my car always says range =500 miles whenever I fill it up.

The true figure for 500 miles would be an average of 64mpg.

So have Fiat programmed the cars with what they consider to be the average mpg they assume that you can achieve?

I had a mk 2 punto and a stilo, and Im sure in the handbook it said that it went on the average MPG given by the trip comp and the amount of fuel left in the tank... I do remember the miles left to empty on both cars used to fluctuate depending on what mpg it was showing... well thats what I assumed anyway! dont know if this has changed with later models.

It's not the same in the diesel, it gives the range depending on the recent fuel consumption it seems. Varies from 400-600 or there abouts.

Well maybe as the readout of how much fuel is in the tank isnt an actual figure, but is a lot of little blobs on a scale, it doesnt know exactly how much fuel is in the tank, just the fact that its full, so it kind of guesses. (Bad italian accent) "Oh itsa bouta 30 litres give or take-a. 500 miles isa close enough. Im offa for another cappucino. Ciao." :nutter:

like the accent!

Afternoon

Just wondering how much fuel you are finding is left once the display starts reading 'Warning, low fuel'?

I just filled up after the "Warning Low Fuel" light came on. I squeezed in 43L.
The Owner's Manual says tank capacity is 48L (1.4L petrol) so there was still 5L (i.e. 1.1 UK gallons) remaining in the tank, although there may be some "dead space" so not all the 5L may have been accessible.

Moderator's Note: This post was made by a 500X owner (hence the different tank capacities - the 500 is 35l nominal). Left in place as it's spawned a discussion.
