I got given £2200 once for a mint 3 year old Cinq Sporting in px against a Seicento, a week later it was up for £3995.... now thats just plain greed:(

Oh dear. A lesson learned for next time. I wonder how much my 2003 Streetka will be selling for once it has been prepared for resale. I was offered £3800 (up from £3000 according to CAP figures) against a 1.2 Sport.

Suffice to say, I'm still running the Streetka until my 500 arrives early May.

well...I went to the Fiat dealer today and they seriously under valued my car, saying they were going by the book value, when I drove out the dealer I saw a 2004 clio, mine's a 2006 fiesta, up for the same price they were offering me!!

So...decision made, I'm going to sell it privately.

Not too sure about going to a Ford dealer, I'm a bit of a chicken, 'cos they're there to sell cars so I'd feel a bit stupid trying to sell my car to them!

If i read you right you have already brought a new car from them and now you want them to PX your car. As you have already signed on the dotted line for the new car they are hardly likely to give you a good price for your ford. Next time you buy a new car haggle for a decent PX price before you agree to buy the new one. I PX my Panda for a new 100HP and got £500 more then i was hoping to get for it privately. Its a lot less hassle doing a PX and if you are prepared to haggle and even walk out of the showroom if they dont offer you what you want you will be suprised how much you can get . The dealer i brought my 100HP from has my old Panda up for £500 more than they gave me for it, so they arent going to make much on that are they.

You got a good PX from Westover Fiat... bloomin well done, they are normally right crooks:)

They gave us a good PX on our Mondeo when we brought the Eleganza as well.

Think they are alot better than when they were in Charminster. I remember going in there a few years ago to buy a new Bravo, was PX ing a Ford Orion Ghia, they offered me 1000 less than book price, and that was after buying two new cars from them previously. I always have a fixed bottom price of what i want and if they dont offer me it i walk out. They make enough money on new cars without doing me on the PX as well.

I would agree if it meant £1795 of profit. But the car then needs to be prepped for sale mechanicaly, that eats a bit . Even if one car is fine there willbe another that needs loads. Then theres wages to be paid on the sales admin side salesman commission to be paid of the sale of the car. Dealership bills also arte paid out of the margin in a car, also money that goes to dealer group to pay for the dealer network. accompany this with the fact they won't sell the car for what they are asking and that initial figure of £1795 suddenly becomes a lot smaller.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they sell cars for free. Just that there is less profit in it than many people realise.

I found this new valuation guide on AA's website, which is powered by said CAP.

http://www.theaa.com/cbg/vehicleDetailsValuationAction.do

might be a more accurate valuation tool than others available, but with the couple of checks I have done all avlues in a few 100's of the other ones available.

Also read somewhere online that Parkers and CAP are part of the same group?

Hi guys

My girlfriend's going to order a 500 (probably 1.2 Lounge) tomorrow, and has a 4-year-old MX5 to trade in.

As we'll have to wait for the 500 (and wouldn't want to take delivery in August so we're looking at September at the earliest), has anyone managed to get dealers to confirm a PX price as part of the order?

I see some people have had problems getting them to do this, but if you're relying on getting a certain amount for your old car to fund the purchase of the 500, it seems a bit of a worry that they could drop the price they're offering after you've signed the order form.

BTW our nearest dealer is Evans Halshaw in Cardiff. Anyone had any experience of dealing with them?

Thanks
Dan

My recent experience:

The dealer offered a set price for my car and then said it is depreciating by £300 a month and therefore was going to take off that £300 a month until the new car arrived. Needless to say we have no real idea of the car's arrival so I wasn't happy with that. When I pushed him to query it (not literally by the way LOL) he went off to 'talk to someone', was gone ages and then agreed to knock only £300 off for an end of August delivery. When I queried what would happen if the car didn't materialise by end of August (it is Funk White and they take longer to arrive), would I be penalised further, he said, "we'll be prepared to swallow the depreciation ourselves".

So in short, I pushed and got a fixed price on my car - if they try to reduce the value I shall quote our conversation at the time of ordering.

Just be firm and if you aren't happy with the valuation or the terms then tell them that you aren't going to buy and see what happens.

My dealer agreed a price for part ex on lindas smart car which was a very good price indeed and didn't say anything about it going down each month they stuck to that price and that was that deal done :)

My dealer agreed a guaranteed trade in value if I could'nt retail our car privately (which we did in the end).

Times are hard in the car sales dept at the mo so be tough.....and stand your ground!!

I don't think Evans Halshaw Cardiff are dealing with Fiat's anymore. A brand new Fiat dealership has recently opened next door on Penarth Road called Wessex Garages. You'd probably be better off dealing with them instead.

Below is their contact details from fiat.co.uk Dealer search:

Thanks that's saved a repeat of the day we went to buy the MX5 and were looking for Victoria Park Mazda in Victoria Park when they're on Hadfield Road

Thanks to all who've replied. Will let you know how we get on at Wessex.

stoneacre @ worksop gave me £7800 for a 2003 v5 beetle that were only selling for 4-5000 needless to say i snatched off there hand ( before they could think ) we gave them the car 12 weeks before the 500 was delivered we did online shopping walked the kids to school and used our other car for work the best part is 4 months later they are still trying to sell it...

Wessex offered £7,000 for our 2004 MX5 Sport which was lower than we were hoping for. Those who were offered good trade-in prices, which dealers did you use? (Stoneacre is now on the list, thanks white 500 :))

Fiat dealer margins on the 500 are small compared to the rest of the range - hence why only minimal discounts. If they think they can get a good car in part ex. at a good price they will try to market that for an extra income. Trouble is no-one is in car showrroms at present so chances are any offers are going to be somewhat derogatory. Private sales are pretty slow as a result too.

At least the less you spend the less you have to lose !
