"I've engineered a solution to a problem I didn't have" :D

When friends came round to dinner 3 months ago, they were shown Valentina. They liked her so much that they are having their own 500 restored by the same people I used in Italy.

They are going red on white interior but with the addition of an Abrath style instrument cluster. Rev, temp, pressure and others. It's not for me, I prefer the look and style of the single round Speedo. But each to their own and it gets another beautiful 500 back on the road.

But, being almost a man, it got me thinking that I would like to know some of the engine parameters that the Abrath gauges offer.

So, I became an Internet warrior and started to look at options. I wanted some thing that could be easily removed (unplugged) and yet functional in terms of measurements I wanted.

So, I came across an integrated LCD which supports Revs (8000rpm), Oil temp (140c), Water temp (140c), battery voltage (up to 19V) and oil pressure (100psi) also a clock (like I’ll ever set that. . .) (y)

The LCD unit supported 3, 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engines, so I was going to need to find a convertor for the tach signal. The Bay of e had a solution and I set the LCD unit to 4 cylinders. The tach convertor box doubles the signal so job done. No under reporting.

I tested the water / oil temp sensors using a cup of hot water and an infrared thermometer. see picture, looks to be pretty accurate to me.

I wired up the tach convertor and LCD to the negative of the coil and got rev’s Whoop whoop. I could not test the oil pressure sender unit. As did not have the correct kit. In fact, during fitting it worked, then stopped working. Went open circuit. However, the specifications are the same as a VDO unit. 0 – 10 bar and 0 – 180 ohm resistance. So a VDO unit was installed. The VDO unit cost more than the LCD !

So, picked Val up today after a serious service and few upgrades (see the other thread re: Ansa exhaust)

The chaps had done a great job of wiring it all in. Also needed a 12.5mm / 1/8NPT oil t-piece so that I have both oil pressure sensors installed. The LCD unit has a plug onto a socket under the dash glove box, so can be easily removed.

The rev’s, oil pressure / temp and voltage all working great on the trip home. For me, it’s a great solution and not that expensive. For you guys who are more adapt with a spanner than I, it would not be a hard install.

I’m happy ! :worship:

Some videos.

First off, the power on self test of the LCD. so you can see all the parameters and their max settings.

In the car and in use. Oil pressure, revs and volatage changing when the power pedal is pressed (y)

Morning Peter. I've only driven one trip so far and will need to have a few more trips to ascertain the baseline parameters. I seem to recall that oil pressure was around 60psi when cold on start up, cold thick oil etc. When hot, idle gave around 12psi. The max oil temp was around 75c but this was on a short-ish trip.Surprising to see the effectivness of the cooling when the car was in motion, the oil temp dropping down fairly quickly. I'll need to get madam out and take some notes.

The RPM signal comes from the negative of the coil. This runs into a little electronic tach convertor box to double the signal and feed into the LCD which is expecting 4 cyclinder input.

The LCD about £45, includes temp and pressure sensors. The tach box convertor £52 and new VDO oil pressure sensor £50. oil pressure t-piece to support both sensors, about £20

You may be ok and the oil pressure sensor that comes with the LCD works ok. Mine went open circuit.

Although its a bit of fun, it is interesting to me, to know what the engine is doing. Establish baselining and be able to catch something early. .

Cheers
Rob

Hi Rob the 123 ignition system does all of this via Bluetooth to your phone and has the added option of shutting off the ignition when you leave the car.(not sure how accurate it is?)IMG_7591.JPG

That option would be brilliant but I don't think it's available for the Fiat 500/126. :(

I have it on my 652cc! mind you it’s not In my car yet. I’m hoping to have the car completed in the next couple of months. I think my 123 is a latter model. All the tuning is done via my phone!IMG_7592.JPG

Hi, so this is the Tune +, you can tune via your phone the ignition curve and as you state, it has an immobilizer.

You may get the RPM from the device and app, but for the other settings, oil temp, oil pressure, volts and amp. you'll need some sensors and wiring installed.

Also, best part of 400 euros so not cheap. And you can't use your phone for anything else if you run the app in the car.

Pro's and cons. Do let us know what you get in the box and how the install goes (y)

LazyLobster - Great work with the LCD screen that looks like a great idea for a bit of diagnosis or a part time display.

Leo - On the Tune+ Is the Bluetooth module in the distributor or on a separate mini ecu? does it have ports to plug in additional sensors?

Hi MOD500 the Bluetooth connection is via the distributor. It also allows for curve mapping on the fly.
I’ll let you know more when I have it up and going. I bought it about 18months ago from a local Aussie distributor with a high output coil for something like $500 AUD. The system is called the 123 plus. I also believe I can run the 123 app dash dials while listening to my favorite “fiat 500” mix on my Bose wireless sound system. I can post a link if anyone would like more info.

Hi Daniel, this is interesting for me. But I needed to know more info. I reached out and emailed the company, as the web site was not showing a lot of info on the Tune + device in terms of measurements and connections required. Their response is as below.

they do a TUNE + dist for a 4 cy Fiat but not a 2 cyl engine. And looks like you cannot connect additional sensors up. I suspect the 2 cyl dist is too small to fit in the extra electronics required.

Hi Rob,
You can download our app.
We only display settings which we can measure in the ignition, so you can't connect additional sensors.
Sorry, there is no unit for the FIAT 500 engine.

Hi team, your new Tune + (bluetooth) distributor looks interesting. I see there is an app with various functions.
Can you advise what functions, the new distributor provides to the app. I suspect voltage and revs, but for other settings like oil pressure, oil / water temperature , do you need additional sensors and wiring ?
Do you have a unit that fits the 2 cylinder Fiat 500 engine ?
Regards
Rob

Thanks for that additional info Rob. I hope this helps others with any questions they may have and that you continue to enjoy your Fiat.
