just had the Down Pipe Cat fitted today on my Punto MKII (61k miles)

tried to drive off the forecourt of the exhaust place and steering really heavy and the WHEEL warning light is on the dash in RED.
No power steering :(

Before I lay into the garage. Is there anything they could have touched when getting to and fitting the CAT pipe that may have damaged the power steering.

the car went in fine and steering all good.

No one rang me in the day to say.. BTW do you know the PS isn't working.

So me thinks it's too much a coincidence its not working.

Thoughts?

lot of stop starts moving it around at the garage could have run battery down that will kill pas until its charged

TNX

Think you're right. I read on here that it could be low battery power.

So just been out to the car and teh LIGHT has now gone out and it's working!!
I've been a run around the block for ten mins and it still seems fine.

Now.. do I run-in the new CAT?

Low batteries or a weak battery causes the powersteering to shut off due to insufficient power

If the battery isn't holding a full charge or a weak alternator not replenishing the battery quick enough, followed by a few short shunting around a garage, would be a very very plausable

If it was me - running around a block for 10mins will get the majority of the power back up
But it wouldnt get the battery fully recharged, a dedicated unit does that

Tbh if the lights now out - ignore it

Running a new cat in, drive like normal :)
But what made the original cat fail in the first place?

ziggy

quite simple, the bottom of the pipe of the cat, that attaches to the centre section, had rotted away and snapped off next to the connection bracket.

the cat hadn't failed.

£229 later.. a new cat pipe fitted ;)

dam i hope you kept old cat, you can cut a bit off a scrap exhaust with a flange on it and slide it over the end of your broken bit and hold it on with U clamp
