Hei.

The bloody Uno doesn't start anymore. My family had been grocery shopping and left the car outside for me to park it. I turned the key, and it said a little "pip". And that's it. Not a sound at all - complete silence!

I suppose the "pip" came from the starter engine. All electrical equipment and lights etc. works fine, so it's not the battery. I have tried striking the solenoid with a piece of wood if it had stuck itself up, but no. The wires seem intact, but have not done any voltage metering.

It's also too bloody dark and cold to do anything right now. The car jumpstarts very nice though, but it's not a very good solution.

So tell me folks: Is this starter fault symptoms? Should I just get a new one?

Morten.

jumpstarts? (means starting with boostercables here) if it does that then its the battery or earth. or did you mean starts with a push start (people push till you get a but of speed then let clutch out) then its the starter motor or solenoid i would think.

Hei Dave.

Sorry, but I'm learning though... What I meant was a push start (we call it a "roll-start" (meaning downhill) even if people push the car) with ignition on, clutch in and then out in 2nd gear.

Guess I'll have to find a wrecked Uno and rip out the starter. Difficult actually, few of them here.

Thanks, Morten.

Try to unbolt your starter from the car and disassemble it...I don't really trust on scrapyards' goodies:D!I think you'll need new brushes,to check the solenoid and then to clean the dirt which probably stays on the spindle;) and doesn't allow the mechanism to work properly.

ive never had any trouble with scrapyard goods, they mark them up over here and if they don't work they give a refund.

Hey, i had the same problem with my uno. My car is a 1.0 and the starter is behind the engine. There is one small earth connection on the solenoid that is some kind of spade clip. If you feel round and make sure it is on tightly this could be the problem. It was on mine.

After about another year the motor died completely but this was a seperate problem. I got a nearly new motor from ebay for a tenner. does the job fine. Is an easy job too. good luck

OK, it's done.

Fiat salesman refused to sell me one - he meant it would increase the Uno's value by 50%. [:0] He told me to get one from a scrappy, and wasn't even willing to give me the price tag for it - "you don't want to know" he said. :) With the price tag for a new fuel tank still on my mind, I really didn't want to know...

So to the scrappy I went, and got a starter that had "travelled" 40.000 km. The worn out one has over 115.000 today. Two wires and three bolts out and the starter was removed and replaced.

The Uno was happy-happy and started at first keyturn.

Will look into the old starter and keep it for spare if it's fixable. I'll try as Enzo says.

Thanks.

Morten.
