Hi guys,
My uno 999cc FIRE, has developed a petrol smell which comes out from the exhaust....and in the morning it smokes a lot. I thought it was condensation, but then I look at other cars and they have very little condensation comin out of the exhaust....u know what it could be??

I also think that my fuel consumption has increased. Last time I checked (last week) it was around 31mpg!

Help PLEASE!!!!:bang: :bang: :(

Does the exhaust "shoot"?
Petrol smell coming from the exhaust seems to point at unburnt mixture, which may be caused by one (or more) spark plug not sparking properly.
The petrol vapors then collect in the exhaust piping, catching fire now and then with a loud "bang" and a telltale cloud of black smoke out of exhaust...
Is it carburettor or SPI?

After reading your story about driving in the rain I wouldn’t be surprised if there is water somewhere in the ignition system. If the engine is a fire check for a pool of water in with the spark plugs. Also clean out the distributor.

Hi CZenda...well mine is a SPI and it doesnt shoot as you put it.hehe.Thing is it drives normally except when I reach 3500rpm there is a slight lag...and then it keeps pullin!

jjhepburn: I dont think it was the rain I drove through because it was happening since before that event....but only now did I have the chance to post about it!!

I am thinkin that the carb is rich(hence wasting petrol). Some white smoke is coming out as well from the back....but it dissappears instantly...and only comes out after I have revved the engine a bit!! Anymore ideas?

Ok, though you live in sunny Malta, even over there it can get cold occasionally!

Has there been any fall in the temperature (the weather, not the car!) recently? A cold spell in Malta perhaps?

Unburnt fuel smell out of the exhaust and high fuel consumption almost defintely point to an over rich fuel mixture. White'ish steam out of the exhaust that clears up quickly could simply be down to cold weather and condensation forming in the exhaust. Cold weather = rich mixture = petrol smell = higher fuel consumption!

But if the steam out of the exhaust becomes constant then you could possibly be looking at a head gasket failure.

Hopefully all will be fine (y)

your engine is running rich. air temp sensor, oxygen sensor[exhaust]. this car needs a diagnostic to find the problem quickly.:)

I guess I will try the diagnostic so that I check everything. I will do it after exams though as I havent got the time to do it now.....will keep you posted..

PS. I finish exams next week..:)
