Angry 95 Uno just died, no spark, new cap, ignitor, wires - stumped

Hi chaps.. just redid engine for a friend, after driving 5kms, it suddenly died and haven't managed to start it since.

Not 100% sure what model, but its a single carb (weber iirc) / non turbo with elec ignition (white cap) and no crank sensor/pickup. Maybe pacer?

Checked fuses, replaced all plug/coil wires and installed a new ignition module (silver one on the distributor).

This model doesn't have points, its electronic.. + car ran perfect before!

when u do the screw driver trick on the coil wire, it sparks when we turn car on and off, but nothing while cranking.. surely the coil should still spark occasionally?

anyway, its dead and not sure what else to try ??

is there a way to diagnose where the spark is being lost with a multimeter?? Car is def getting fuel, serviced the carb - like I said ran perfect, then literally just died and no spark since then. triple checked fuses...

I suspect the pickup is either bust or not getting power which ill check in the morning. Checked all wired in dizzy for breaks etc, found no issues. made sure coil is grounded as well as ignition module.

any ideas?

Re: 95 Uno just died, no spark, new cap, ignitor, wires - stumped

hey there, i fit this exact same ECU setup to my panda...

now its sparking only when the ignition is turned on and off and *not* while cranking?
if so that tells me that the coils are only getting the "pulse" when the power is cut to the ignition module. though you have replaced the ignition module, i'd swap it over again with another just to make sure.
i had this same issue. and it was that damn ignition module at fault even though it was new.
its very rare that the "point less" points ever fail

now the spark system is exactly the same as the older carbed (no ECU) version (or panda 4x4s).
the ECU picks up the engine speed from the ignition module via the ignition coil.
below i have made a wiring diagram. if you look at the coil you will see a blue and white wire coming out of the coil, but here you will also have a green wire going to the ECU (on the uno this is all built into the 4 pin plug that plugs into the coil). it is this wire that tells the ECU when to inject fuel, so no need for a crank position sensor.

this is how the ignition module is wired up:

let me know how you get on with it.
any questions, please do ask.

hey - removed timing cover and found the tensioner had popped off - so the belt was not turning which resulted in no spark - figured this out because when we turned dizzy by hand as a LAST resort found good spark.

very relieved(!!!) since we tested with another and also had no spark!

tx for the comments dragon man, much appreciated!!

nope, possibly if i held my head to the head i MIGHT have not heard the compression, but the starter is loudish.. wd never have guessed just cant believe spent a whole day lol.. sooo glad found it..

any tips on the tensioner pulley torque? ... never had a tensioner pop out like that before - we were doing 35ks / hr - - - -

worth double checking the bearing.. ,and the way it was fitted,

as a rule of thumb I do them pretty tight ( by hand),
it's an M8 steel thread if you want to cross reference

Re: 95 Uno just died, no spark, new cap, ignitor, wires - stumped

yeah, maybe some blue loctite, although when the ignition module died - because we were doing town driving in 3rd, there was quite a big kick back from the wheels into the engine and i suspect that overloaded the tensioner (which is new - as a rule I change this and h20 pump on 'unknown' engines). Just our bd luck the module failed 5kms after we redid the motor!!

oh well - murphys law i guess!
