Do you know the speaker’s efficiency (above 90dB at 1W/1M is good) I think for car audio they quote at a test distance 1/2M (still 1W in) so the dB value will be 6 more dB (as doubling of distance = -6 dB).

:chin: Peak power is not a much of a guide for the expected sound pressure level (SPL) output at maximum power.

 With the right choice of speaker and set-up, you can get a clear SPL high enough to give you ear fatigue after a few minuets for little cash.

LOL ben is a busy man! TBH I did the same to try and donate - no reply. Perhaps post on the Donation reminder in Ideas Forum ;)

my 6X9’s sound poo, do you think it cos they not getting enough power? Or just cos there cheapo make?
Many silly things make even the best of speakers sound rubbish!

Unboxed, the air you are trying to excite gets cancelled at low frequency as its opposite travels round the edge of the speaker and cancels the wave. that’s why speakers are boxed ;)

If you have a speaker out of phase (+Ve and - Ve wrong way round on 1 driver) again at low frequencies, L channel will cancel R channel and you lose the stereo imaging through the whole spectrum (sound Poo).

If you have multiple speakers too near each other of different brand / model, all boxed and in phase, you easily get what is known as the Comb filter effect - where some parts of the sound cancel each other out, others are doubled. This is because the wavelength at each frequency is different, so they meet at alternate phase and cancel or add together. Nothing you can do about it and it will also happen with 2 pairs of exactly the same speakers.

As the ear can only detect a changing phase angle, it just sounds weird.

For the best option, go for 1 pair of decent speakers, TBH you get a come filter effect having front and rear speakers, but as they are spaced relatively far apart, it is not so bad.

With the right House speakers you can get a High quality Sound out of the head unit no additional amplification!

TBH, Do you think you might be drawing chav attention to your Uno by blasting out tunes and revving engine, whilst driving nowhere? This may be annoying to your neighbours

id say im about the least annoyance in my street, lol. its a rough area, music is allway thumping from other people as well, lol. annoying at night!

Louie, how is it my friend? I haven't been here for ages and it's a laugh trying to catch up! :)

BTW, awesome job on the new forum arrangement!
Looks like we share the same tastes in kebabs (rather than burgers with meat remains, yuk) and I totally agree with you about the speaker points you described. Most people just haven't a clue on how to get speakers sounding great.

Those crappy 4" speakers of mine (ummm, all four pounds worth!) sounded four times better once they were screwed firmly into the metal of the sealed-off doors, instead of the usual flapping-around-on-the-cardboard type of install which I couldn't bring myself to do.

Actually, while I admire your boxed-up rear shelf, I don't usually reckon on having so much sound coming from behind you - you either have lots of sound at the front also, or maybe you just use your Uno at parties with the tailgate open :)

I've taken a liking to Groove Armada lately (I suppose it's a bit 'slow' by most musical standards, but pretty groovy for open-top driving in the cool autumn mornings or evenings!) Might have to transfer the 12" sub box into my X1/9's front boot - at least the battery is nice and handy!

My 1987 Uno 60 is sold, $900 (over 300 pounds!) Not bad considering total cost of $500... :D

Once I get my Alfa 164 finished off (I started taking the dashboard apart to re-seal the various air conditioning components, silly me) I'll be able to work on my Uno Turbo - can't wait - needs the new clutch fitted, the replacement windscreen, and a quick respray to the left door/front wing. Should get it done in time for winter and be able to use it for a few trips to the snow (enough space in the back of an Uno for a snowboard or two, or even my old skis if I feel the need!)

Actually my garage is currently filled with a Subaru SVX that I'm working on for a friend - just a few cosmetic/stereo install issues to sort out.

I work six days a week at an electronics store which I helped set up a month ago, and I also work the remaining one day a week still putting bread on supermarket shelves... so not much free time to speak of! I'll give up one or both jobs in a few months time and find something more profitable to do... :)

Anyway, enough from me, keep up the good work :)

Nice to know the man his self is Alive and kicking!:slayer:!!! Thanks for the compliments :) – things are good as I got nicely made redundant a couple of weeks ago ;)

I know what you mean about all the sound from rear – My first MK1 Uno had only rear drivers for a short time – then I fitted some in the usual place (to card) .

The Mk2 dash has space for a pair of speakers, so I fitted a pair of JBLs :). At higher levels, they start to “fart” below about 120Hz, so I drive most power from the JPWs in the back. The UK£ 3 door rug cover soaks most of the top end, so I get great stereo imaging from the front, loads of bass out of the rear.

I’ve just come back from a long scrap yard trip. I decided to try the amp with these rear speakers – A Long Mill JX300 - 300W (PMPO). I made a quick plug system for the amp’s power so it takes only 1 minute to hook up and remove :) so never left in my car (y)

The JPW’s can’t take the amps full power like the sub, but as they have grater sensitivity, the sound pressure level is not too far behind that of normal speakers running off head unit with the sub. The tailgate dances as much as it did with the 300W sub in the boot, so I’m happy.

I think the next stage is to get another smaller stereo amp, fit my active X-over (better 5 years late than never) and sub in, then – as you say party with boot open.

 A Sub in a front boot sounds mental!

I’m glad you made some cash from the Uno and are keeping busy. Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures of the Uno Turbo jobs for us all. – Hmm windscreens you say, what do you reckon to https://www.fiatforum.com/showthread.php?t=28752 ?

Regards,

Up to 50 now eh? Saving's great, isn't it? :)

I wonder if you can get a reground camshaft for your Uno, would probably give the biggest power increase for the money!

Failing that I agree with Turboned... you can fit the rear springs easily yourself, the fronts require a spring compressor tool to take the struts apart.

Alternatively, I reckon with 50 'squid' you should be able to give the exterior and interior a makeover with some cleaning/polishing products... you might surprise yourself? Plastics always look a lot newer when they've had some magical slime massaged into them... and a proper clean/detail of the interior (two hours) plus another hour or two cleaning the windows always makes a BIG difference to how the car 'feels', particularly to anyone else that might ride in it. They won't notice your lowered suspension or reground camshaft, but they will see your clean windows... sounds boring I know, but it's satisfying in a sad kind of way... ;)
