Hello everyone,

I lost my fiat uno keys 2 weeks ago, so i decided to buy an ignition switch with its keys so i can finally bring my car back to life :worship:

Do you know guys how can i remove the old ignition switch and replace it with the new one ?

If yes, can someone please explain to me step by step the process ?
(i'm very new into this cause it's the first time)

Thanks guys :slayer:

The procedure is in the Haynes manual, maybe someone has a download link for you.

Hello Hyperspace,

Yes i downloaded it but unfortunately it doesn't explain ignition swith removal when ignition keys are lost :(

For most Fiats of the Uno era, the ignition switch/steering lock was clamped onto the steering column with 2 shear bolts. When the switch is fitted from new, the 2 bolts have normal hexagon heads that shear off when tightened leaving a domed head that you can't fit a spanner onto.

You need to remove the plastic column shrouds and drill the 2 bolts out, however, it's usually not possible to get a drill on them without removing the steering column because of the restricted access.

Rather than removing the column, I've always removed the bolts using a hammer and center punch. Make a center punch mark on top of the bolt head as far out as possible then hold the punch in the mark at an angle and tap it anti-clockwise to undo the bolts.

To refit the replacement lock, either buy new shear bolts, or refit the original bolts using the hammer and punch, or fit normal hexagon bolts.

If you`ve brought the barel only, then you will have to get the old barrel out, however this is done by having the key inserted & turned to position 1 (which then disengages the locking pin from the surround).

Al I can say is find some well worn Fiat keys & do the jiggle method, i.e. insert key all the way in, then start jiggling the key up & down while very slowly pulling the key out untill one works, then you can put it in position 1 & withdraw the barrel from the housing properly.

Its that or use a slide hammer on the lock, which can cause damage to the housing & steering column.
