WHat's the modified stat?

The Uno turbo thermostat is a discontinued part. However, it turns out that the 1.3 70 models are the same apart from two differences:

1. There's a restrictor plate in the mounting flange of the thermostat.
2. There's no hole for the sensor/ switch though the casting for it is present.

So to modify it, you pull out the restrictor plate (it's only staked into place) and you drill out the hole and tap a thread in the casting for the sensor/ switch. No doubt Jai will take pictures of this to make it more clear. End result will be a fully functioning brand new thermostat (y)

DONE WELL TO bOING THEM BUSHES ON (y)

TCA bushes - one I think just slides on, the other needs a garage with a big press to push the mofo in...

As for the ARB bushes, they fit on easily enough as they're a split design. However, they seem slightly too big therefore they are an absolute pain to compress enough to bolt the outer brackets down. Plus trying to get the ARB into place so that it could all be tightened up was a nightmare of epic proportions and lead to the mission being aborted at 4am. A combination of tiredness, frustration and aching hands was bad enough, but the driveshaft popping out of the outer CV joint was enough for the white flag to be waved. :bang:

Photos seem to show a success story to me. Wish I could use a hoist like that.

I'm sure you can get most of those other jobs polished off back at your place ;)

What happened with the CV joint?

-Alex

Photos only show half the story Alex...

The driver's side outer CV joint somehow managed to pop itself off the driveshaft. We'd disconnected the hub from the TCA ball joint so that the new TCA could be fitted, and we also disconnected the hub from the strut to allow more movement of the suspension arm TCA. In the process the 'jump ring' (thanks for informing me of a part I didn't know what it was Alex ;) ) had managed to force its way through the CV joint causing the shaft to come out. There's nothing in the Haynes manual about this type of clip nor specific details on the Turbo outer CV joint. It only covers the other models which use a conventional circlip on the inside (as per shaft side) of the joint that can be accessed with normal circlip pliers.

As such, after a very long day and with the sun threatening to come up over the horizon we'd both had enough! Now I know how that kind of joint should go together we could've probably got something sorted that night. But after 14 hours of working and frustration, getting an oversized Polish man to take over seemed the most appealing option ;)

We need another instalment montage Jai-J! ;)
as you wish(y)

still the worst is over now (fingers crossed:p) photos of the new rad, stat etc to follow, with dets on the modification to make it a turbo one.

before that though, saturday brings a new odyssey:

time now, 215am.....just got in from watching date night...tina fey is lickabley hot

up at 6, out at 630, across to colchester to collect a new set of (wait for it!) alloys, this time for the paj, she needs new tyres very soon, esp for her upcoming MOT, a full set of kumho 798 would be about £240, they alloys come with, and are for £120, well worth it.

back by 930-10, straight back out to the MOT centre with tippex for the retest......

back online by about 1 for the word.

...looking forward to it, edge-of-seat stuff!
Uno Turbo driveshafts are seriously fat aren't they... I mean phat... just look at the girth.

I especially like that classic lighting in the last photo - could be a picture from the 80s.. :)

Gosh Jai, you've bought some alloy wheels for the Pajero Junior - but only one set? How is that going to be sufficient? I'm sure you need at least a couple more sets - standard size, plus-one size, big-spoke type, shiny type, original type with some rare variation, newer type that still fits, etc.

ok, i'm back from deepest colchester, new alloys safely stashed in the shaed, having a quick bowl of porridge, then bailing to the MOT.

reason for 798s rather than proper off roaders is that junior does about 10k miles a year on mainly motorways, as a result, comfort, road noise etc are prime considerations, the 798 is a 95% road biased tyre, ha a set for the last 4 years and they have been fantastic. this set came up for £150, with alloys, as it's only a month to her MOT, is a bargain, as new tyres are £240ish alone, forget fitting, disposal etc. i saw them a week ago, and called the vendor, we struck a deal at £120, and he was ok to hold till today, problem is tippex threw a wrench in the works, didn't plan on this sequence of events.

to paraphrase Helmuth von Moltke the Elder "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy"

fight the good fight, never back down.....no fear!

well, the new new caliper worked fine, the bad news is the new old one, that i got years ago and put into storage, is faulty..............basically as best as my addled brain can figure, the hydraulic bit is fine, the lever off the handbrake is buggered, so won't grip. short version? she failed the retest. result? a new test will cost another £40, have ordered a new caliper, but being a saturday, i won't get it till tuesday am, i'm back at work, on earlies from wednesday, working till early evening.

this leaves a very narrow window for the new test, tuesday afternoon.....providing the caliper arrives anyway.....

so that's essentially it, chas is coming over in a few hours to help do the cooling system, at least that should be straig....wait hang on what the **** was i about to say.......:bang:

right about now, this is all i can offer to sum up my state of mind:

1 year ago, a crack commando unit was sent to North Acton with a business plan they weren't sure would work. These men promptly set up a Petrolhead's dream facility in the Park Royal Trading Estate. Today, still trading as Pitstart, they survive as mechanics of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The Pitsart Team.

:D

it would appear my ambition outreached not only my ability, but that of my friends, suppliers and even the equipment used.....i can look back on the last week or so and be quite proud of the amount of changes and work achieved, but that doesn't hide the fact that i still have to shell out another £40, for a massive fail. to say i'm gutted is an understatement.

to add more insult to injury, time is working against me for brooklands on saturday, the new caliper has been ordered, but won't arrive till tuesday, what time? your guess as good as mine. so it arrives, if i want it to look right, needs a half day to prep, paint and dry for fitting. fitting about 30 mins, then bleeding. if it arrives early can get to the mot station for late afternoon, and cinderella will go to the ball.

the fly in the ointment is if it comes later, no time to prep it, and maybe no time to mot on tuesday, then i'm working wed-fri, early starts, late finish, i'm screwed.

maybe nicking the panda would be a good idea:rolleyes:

anyway, i'll put the razor away, lets end on a happier update, :D

cleaned up the wishbones and arb before tucking them away:
P1100342.JPG

so chas came over and we got into the cooling system, out came the recently installed new thermostat:
P1100351.JPG

as did the radiator, dizzy cap, afm, filter for easier access:
P1100348.JPG

P1100349.JPG

so, this is how a 70sx thermostat comes, as you can see there is a restrictor plate staked in the 4 corners:
P1100354.JPG

use a screwdriver, gentle prising and it pops out:
P1100359.JPG

on the outward facing side, you see:
P1100357.JPG

now that hole wasn't there, it's blanked on a 70sx, so quick trip to a local workshop, drilled and tapped to accept the sensor that screws straight in:
P1100355.JPG

so that's how you make a 70 thermostat into a turbo one, fitting is the same(y)
P1100367.JPG

new radiator, with old working fan:
P1100364.JPG

P1100365.JPG

the coolant was only put in last week, a funny cherryade colour:
P1100369.JPG

so it went back in.
P1100373.JPG

end of the day, a win, a hollow victory, but we got one back:)

Based on my usage, 3 - 4 years (y)

Before going to deep treaded noisy side I had BFG Tarmacadams which are road tyres, they last for yonks.

Mind you, anything is better than ruddy original Jap rubber (n)

newsflash, jason will not let this one slide, like a testosterone fuelled terrier, he's bitten down hard, and won't let it go.

a new plan of attack has been formulated, one that should have enough flexibility built in, to give us an even chance of success.

the games on, new countdown, clock starts ticking on tuesday morning!

brooklands or bust:slayer:
