well, i am back in the Italian camp! ;D

Found myself a little beauty yesterday and couldnt pass up on it for the money.
in need of some serious TLC but i am up for the challenge....

Mk1 Fiat Uno Turbo
stock standard Crystal Green Italian Stallion
1987 (prob one of the first registered in NZ)
231,000 loving Kilometres
actually isnt too bad for a 22 year old car, just wants a few things fixing/upgrading.

Uno.jpg

Hitlist:
Dent in rear drivers side 1/4
Full service
Cambelt
suspension
turbo upgrade
full interior clean out
Drivers side window motor
Drivers door adjusting
new roof, de-sunroof it
slight bit of rust on passenger-side guard
new front bumper

these are all the bits i picked up last night while driving home from Katikati in her, i am sure i will find more as i go on.
gave her a real good Italian tune up coming up the bombays last night and the amount of crap that came through i'd be surprised if the turbo has ever been boosted! needless to say after a good belt the car seems to pull a little better, i'm pretty sure it was only boosting 0.5bar when i set off, it's now boosting about 0.6 just for having a good run!

Anyway, pics will come tonight when i see her in the day light, until now i've not actually seen it properly, but a quick look this morning and she seems pretty straight!

BARGAIN!

How much was it if you dont mind me asking?

Looks very nice.

Can we have more pictures of every aspect please?

more pictures will come when i get home tonight and get to have a proper look at it.
I paid very little for it really considering what price they fetch over here.
I reckon i can do all the work on it, have her looking and running beter and still not lose money on it.
I only paid $1500. (y)

nice one good luck with your project, it looks very clean.
roughly whats the conversion from $ to £ ?

i think i got a steal yeah, was listed on the net and within 4 hours about 200 people had viewed it, i took a 2 hour drive last night to go get it before the owner changed her mind on the price!

the bumpers will be coming off and getting cleaned properly, the front has been sprayed at some point and needs totally stripping back.
I love the retro stripes, not many left with those still on them, most have gone rotten and had doors replaced and de-striped.
Nice to have a "different" colour too

i'll be on here questioning you all again but about the Mk1 this time instead of mk2!

talking of which......
The gears snatch a little going into 4th, nothing major, i'm guessing it is just age as the whole 'box feels rather tired. can they be taken apart and overhauled?

Very common for that gearbox.

2 things you need to do. Pull out the gear linkage and fit a new linkage bearing kit, easy as. Next thing is to pull out the box and replace the syncros and check the rest of it out while your at it. Refill with ZC75 synth oil

Yes, Alex is jealous (especially if it turns out to have less rust than mine). ;)

However I've got the better gearbox :D

As Steve says, original-style gearbox probably needs a rebuild at those kms.

What's a full interior clean-out? Is it not going to have an interior by the time you've finished?

In money terms you were probably better off sticking with Steve's Mk2, bit of a refinement difference too wasn't there... (y)

Anyway, nice find.

-Alex

I was considering a shell swap, but the more i think of it the more i hear about changing the roof as being a small (ish) job.
The engine will be coming out and getting fixed up, all the seals need replacing and obviously the turbo needs a slight upgrade.
I'm not sure the previous owner actually ever ran it on the turbo, the amount of crap that flew out the back once i gave it a little right foot....

Interior is going to be fully taken out and cleaned, if it cleans up well then it shall remain intact, if not then it will get half put back with the momo front seats that i have at home.

not much rust really, only a little in the roof and front passenger wing.
you ever up in Auckland Alex? welcome for a looksy if you want

You are talking about replacing the Sunroof with a full roof. I thought that would be a very big expensive job. My sunroof has rust around it, in the normal places. I've been wondering what to do with it. Where are you getting the ideas about replacing the roof. I guess it goes in at the seems under the plastic strips

The roof panel does indeed get welded to the shell underneath those plastic strips. There are also rivets in the channel that hold the plastic clips to retain the plastic strip. No idea how easy it would be to swap roofs and retain the rivets as well, though some people simply fill in the channel and go for a smooth look, so that's another option

Hey Clive,
whenI got the sunroof removed from mine all those years ago the panelbeater reckoned it would have been easier to throw in a whole panel rather than just the patch where the sunroof was, trouble being there wasn't many wrecked standard uno's floating around so I made him do the patch instead.
Putting a whole panel in strengthens the car too.

Nice one! I had looked at that one too, but my wife suggested that a fourth Uno may stretch the marriage vows a bit too far! :D

Oh and my turbo was born November 18 1986 :p
