Hi all
got towed home last night cam belt snapped
its the 2.0 el 1998
questions will it be 8 or 16 valve ?
What damage does it do valves etc?
Or is it copput and needs new engine
cheers rick

Hello,

The 1998 is more likely to be an 8v.

And unfortunately, it is an "Interference" engine, so once the belt snapped, the pistons will have invited the valves for lunch.

Chances are the valves are bent, and the pistons could possibly have suffered some damage.

I would replace the head, or if you fancy a task, then it can be rebuild with new valves, stem seals.

I know that this is probably a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but the belt should have been replaced. There not hard or expensive on the petrol engines.

It depends on how mechanically minded you are, as to if you do the work yourself, or employ a garage.

With parts and labor, it may work out about the same (sometimes cheaper) to get a new engine fitted as get the old one fitted.

There are plenty of used blocks out there.

Timing belt interval is 72k or 5yrs.

They recommend 48k under severe driving conditions, so yours should have been fine, unless last time it was done, only the belt was changed, not the tensioner/rollers too.

I would have expected the belt to have been OK with that mileage too! Mind you, given the size of engine and vehicle, the belts do seem awfully piddly. I've seen wider belts on a 1.4 litre.

Unfortunately you've been very unlucky. But if the rest of the Ulysse is OK and works fine, it'll be possibly cheaper in the mid to long term and a even tad easier to repair/replace the engine than try and find a decent replacement bus (unless you buy mine :)- sorry cheap shot. Hope you get it sorted).

The one that BusDriver is selling, was mine at one point, you decided to part with the old gal then eh?

This is very odd, we are currently looking to change our car.

Last time we were looking, that one was up for sale too, and it is again this time...spooky!
