Start stop issue

Hi, Iíve got a tipo s design and Iíve recently noticed an issue with start stop, and I donít know if itís normal or not. Basically when the car goes into start stop sometimes it disconnects while the engine switches off and then the car stays in idol mode. This means I have to turn the car off then turn on again to start moving again as the you cannot wake it from sleep mode by pressing the clutch. Is this normal? Iíve reverted to keeping start stop off until I resolve the issue.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: Start stop issue

I leave start-stop permanently off in my Tipo as I think Fiat make a dreadful job of it, but in my Parents Fiat 500 it used to do exactly the same as you describe. My guess is the dealer will charge the battery, which will solve the problem temporarily. Then they'll change the battery for a new one, which will also solve it temorarily. Then it'll go back to doing exactly the same as it does now. The amount of owners of Fiat group cars with start stop, reporting that it doesn't work 100% is staggering, hence why I just switch mine off. Plus we don't know what damage it's doing to the rest of the mechanical bits with the engine stopping and starting loads more than it would ordinarily, and Fiat won't care because chances are that damage will only materialise once the car's out of warranty and it won't cost them, it'll cost you or me!

Re: Start stop issue

Thanks a lot for your comment. The only thing I found strange is that when the start stop fails and the car was already in start stop mode (basically fails mid start stop) that the car doesnít restart again so you can at least drive off. In my case the car doesnít restart so you have to turn the engine off and on again just so you can drive away. I had an Audi A3 before this and it also failed sometimes
But the engine turned on when it did so I could keep moving. This is why I was wondering if this may be a fault. What do you think?

Re: Start stop issue

Is there a way of turning off start stop permanently? On my 500X if the button was pressed it was off all the time. With my Punto you have to press button every time you get in the car.

Yeah this is what the Parents Fiat 500 did. Sometimes it'd fire the engine first, but sometimes it'd stop, then beep and say 'Start Stop Unavailabile' and that was that. You'd have to turn the ignition off and back on to get it going again. It'll probably only be solved (for a while) with a new battery or by switching off the start stop. It's not very good.

On my Tipo there's a button to the right of the hazard warning lights button with an A surrounded by an arrow. Press that and an orange light should come on in the rev counter area, which stays on permanently. That's the start stop disabled. On my 2018 model (Pre WLTP emissions testing) once I switched it off, it's stayed off, unlike some Italian cars we've had that you've had to switch it off each time you start up the car.

My 2019 tipo lounge you have to press the button every time you start the car to switch it off. When you get back in the car it doesnít remember the off position and needs to be pressed again. My old 500x once it was switched off it stayed off.

Oh that's annoying. Must be linked to WLTP or perhaps a model year change, as you have the same 1.4 T-Jet 120 engine as I do I think? I don't think the 1.4 16v 95 petrol has start stop but it'd be interesting to see other people's findings. Yours is one of the very latest models as it has the 7" UConnect, which Lounge spec has only just gained.

I wanted an s design because of the 7Ē screen but was told all the new lounge spec had them as standard. They had one in stock and got it in two weeks.....well pleased. I still like the s design wheels but lounge worked out a fair bit cheaper with nearly same spec.Impressed with Apple CarPlay and the new 7Ē screen.

I'm glad I got the S-design as I also like the wheels, plus the Street Grey paint is only available on that trim level. However
I would've been happy with a dark grey Lounge if it'd had the bigger touchscreen - the 5" unit that the Lounge had last year was just not good enough in terms of size, resolution or functionality after coming from an Alfa with the (albeit compromised),6.5" UConnect Live unit. If I chose now I'd have the Lounge with the 1.6 Multijet engine as I do find the petrol mpg hard to deal with after years of Fiat/Alfa diesels.

Re: Start stop issue

Mine came in metallic grey so with the chrome accents looks very upmarket for a Fiat. Iíve had many friends and family comment on the quality looks......

They do look good in the dark grey in particular. I like how they've managed to create a definitive step-up in terms of looks as you progress up the Tipo range - the Easy is like the Panda Pop, clean simple lines. Then Easy Plus adds the alloys and fog lights, while Lounge adds larger powder coated alloys and chrome bits.

That's probably the best option, because unless the Tipo is different to other Fiat's i've experienced, your Tipo's behaviour seems pretty typical for Fiat's start-stop system. It may work effectively after a long journey, but after a while it'll go back to what you've experienced until you do another long journey. Switching start stop off was one of the first things I did when I collected my Tipo in September & it's not been altered since!

Yep, my stop start rarely works ... don't really know why although I understand the system measures all manner of parameters, battery temperature, current etc etc. Curiously I do notice that after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery sensor, and the battery, it starts to work again...for a while and similarly might work once, twice after a motorway trip. It once restarted without touching the clutch. I've also heard of people having fun with stop start on automatic cars! So myself, apart from being a little irritated because something's not doing what it's meant to, I just put it out of my mind now....

Re: Start stop issue

Update - Took it for a couple of hundred mile night away drive and yeah, stop start worked proficiently after the run. So maybe the battery just doesn't get the charge required in my normal driving pattern.
