If a car is on the HPi write off register, what does this mean, other than its been written off...eg: something for sale, assumed repaired after being written off..

Ideas?

That's all it means isn't it? HPI says other things such as whether money is still owed on the car etc. correct?

I thought it just meant that the car was written off due to "uneconomic repair" decided by insurance company then for example sold through a scrap auction and repaired.

It knocks a lot of the value of a car!

Erm. Knocks value is the least of my concerns...

Im more arsed about safety. If the chassis is knackered, It wont deform correctly in another crash. It would stand a higher chance than it already does of killing me!

You found that it has been accident repaired?

First you should check the basic structure of the car, engine mounts, chassis, etc.

It COULD be that it was stolen and recovered because sometimes the insurance pays out then it goes through a salvage auction also. When I have been to salvage auctions approximately 30% of cars have been of this status. Most of the rest, value 1-6k maybe usually have significant body damage and significant mechcanical damage such as twist struts. Have you any receipts to accident repair?

In my opinion and from my experience from these auctions - which were a hobby of my grandfathers! - is that attention was away from ones with serious structural damage and the repairable ones were the ones that sold. I would say that if your car looks ok, has no obvious damage that you can see and most importantly, probably, is that it drives ok. E.g. Straight, a good way of telling structural damage is whether it drives straight.

People don't want to buy accident damaged cars if they have significant structural damage, especially low value cars because there is too much effort (hence money) involved in repair.

Maybe you could go for a RAC inspection to reassure you/scare you to death?

I also believe there are difference levels of accident damage recorded on HPI but I am sure someone knows better than me on that?

I can't imagine what could happen to me in a crash in my uno. I hope they were up to date on crumple zones on the design of the car!

Yeah...well I havent looked into it- its on ebay atm..

Looking at the thing myself isnt an option- its 300 miles away!
A HPi check couldnt give all that info could it really??

There are diffrent grades of write off A B C etc, some can be repaired and put back on the road with a new mot, some can be repaired and put back on the road after a "vic" Some can just be put back on the road and some are breakers only and usally have all identifying marks removed number plates and chassie numbers removed etched windows ground out etc.

I would never buy a accident repaired car without looking at it for a long time and be willing to lose your money.

As Dave says, there are different Categories, with D being the lowest (ie least extensive damage), my Dads Rover got written of last year, it was Cat D, basically it was just the rear door and wheel arch, not very serious:D

What is it your looking at?

Paul, the Uno design dates back to 1980 when they first started designing the car as a replacement for the 127.

Given this I would not like to even consider the outcome of a crash.

Having owned an Uno before my Punto, the thought of crashing one is terrifying. Much as I love Unos, the build-quality and structural strength just isn't up to even late-80's standards. :( Rust and/or a previous crash can only make things worse, so be extraordinarily cautious of this car on eBay.
