Everybody has the basic right to defend themselves. Weather it's a man/woman/group/animal the reaction can only be as appropriate for the situation.
We live in an age of sexual equality (apart from the Catholic Church) and I'm proud of my great Grandmother who was an active part of the Suffragette movement so women can now be treated as well as anyone else in modern society.
This principal can be applied to the military. My Grandmother was ATC Communications officer at RAF Coningsby during the Second World War and guided the Dam Busters home.
Back on the topic of violence and more recently; at the start of the Afghanistan conflict American troops who weren't busy shooting each other were getting dropped by female insurgents because they would hesitate before shooting at a woman with a gun pointing at them. Several who did shoot female insurgents required therapy to get over it. Chivalry vs survival I guess.
My point being women are equally as capable and accountable for their actions as men. So not only would I defend myself within a reasonable amount of force if attacked by anyone male/female/other but I would also ensure the full weight of the law is applied by not only reporting the incident to the Police immediately but do my absolute up-most to ensure the CPS can proceed. You are dealing a violent person; not a violent woman, violent man or violent whatever; a violent person and all people deserve to be treated equally.
Self defense is common sense but if you are asking if disproportionate violence towards women can ever be justified then the answer would be no. For the same reasons as described above. Disproportionate violence towards anyone male/female/other is unjustifiable because there can be no justification for it in the first place.

People tend to get annoyed when you make out that they're wife beaters or take pleasure in hitting women..... Funny that
I'm his woman and he's never lifted a finger to me!
I also know it would take a lot for most of the guys on here, who said yes, to hit a woman. Which is why all the what if's were brought up to show the extreme circumstances needed to provoke the response of hitting a woman.
No one has said they approve of domestic violence in any situation, nor have they said it is ok to hit anyone unless there is no other way out.
I think the main reason the argument of this thread went on so long was because many, including me, believe that under certain circumstances anyone is capable of anything. It may just take more for some people to re-act than others.

Perhaps they should just walk(or run) away instead. The woman stays bruise free and they avoid being labelled ..

I'm pretty sure everyone's argument is violence is wrong.

Oh look, an old pic of me and the missus at the zoo ...
My old man was very old school. I was brought up with a view you never raise a hand to a woman - no compromise.
Once when I was quite young I hit my sister and I got a royal hiding for it
, leather belt and all.
Probably one of only two things that really stuck with me as I grew up, that and not wanting to be a drunk like my dad!
Anyway's knocking on the door of 40 now and it's been quite a while since i've been in a situation when I could have clocked a woman, but when I have been i.e after smacking someone's boyfriend and a girl's come at me iv'e dropped my head, covered up and got out of there.
Don't get me wrong some women are worse than men and also play on the fact they are women and almost certainly deserve a smack, BUT not from me that teaching is burnt in the noodle i'm afraid.
Most women have the gob but physically it's not a fair fight, I know there are some big girls out there but still almost always the girl would come off worse so just don't do it.
Incidentally my son recently got a little too physical with his younger sister and he got a royal telling off from me so hopefully i will succeed in instilling this train of thought in him.

Not everything is black and white in life
PS: I do not condone hitting women, but sometimes in life a time might come where you have to act in a way you would not normally for the sake of yourself or others.
