So realistically you are looking at around 1k give or take. If you go second hand you will get a hell of a lot more and a pretty nice install for your money.
What sort of knowledge does your bro have, with that sort of money if you spend it wisely you could be looking at some hi end kit that will require installing properly. I.e speaker baffles being made, sound deadening.
Also how much performance can you afford to lose on your car the weight of mine reduces acceleration and handling by quite a noticable amount.
If you dont want to lose performance then i would be looking at trying to pick up a Diamond Audio TDX 10" and running in a sealed enclosure. This is a great SQ sub that seems to be coming up on the second hand market (around the £200-250 Mark) quite often lately and should be easier to install than building a ported mammoth of an enclosure.

Edit i just found 1 for £150 with enclosure but apparently has a small dent in cone which wont affect the sound at all.

Well if you start buying subs that weigh 40 KG's, batteries at 28 KG's a pop, large Enclosures using 1"-1 1/2" thick MDF, deadening, amps wiring, large current draw etc etc. It all takes its toll on the car. My suspension at the rear drops a good inch when all is said and done, and the car is incredably different to drive, no more 180 handbreak turns for me lol.
