Must admit i've had a few problems with mine too, the main thing that p****d me off was the fuel consumption, i got better out of my 1.5 civic
I've been quite lucky really though as i think the prat who had it before didn't look after it as well as he could have, it recently had its first oil change since i had it and we took 6 litres out of it
The tappits are as noisy as fook but have been told that thats as bad as they'll get and i got the cam belt changed for £50
So really the car hasn't cost me that much to put right and touch wood 'Barney' seems to be liking the cold weather too <bless him>
Although have noticed recently the sunroof has started dripping, on closer inspection the front rim is badly corroded and crumbles when its touched:bang:
oh yes and the sunroof cover is somewhere inside the roof lining towards the back of the car...like i say, a few problems
its got to the point now where i'm used to not having it working, depends how it goes over the winter, if it gets that bad i'll get one but its like someone said on another thread somewhere that they were badly made so any replacement one will probably go as quickly as the original:bang:
I dunno, I had problems to start with but I glued (well siliconed) the water pipe on and never use the motor if there's snow built up on it and it's been problem free for two and a half years now *touches wood*.
Other issues are a lesson in research before you buy
Hindsights a wonderful thing Helz, problem i had is that i needed a car and quick, unfortunately i was badly advised by someone i thought knew what they were talkin about:bang:
You could always consider looking around for a 1.6 or 1.2 engine to drop in to it. I don't know if there'd be any technical problems with that but you can guarantee that someone will point them out before long if there are
"The tappits are as noisy as fook but have been told that thats as bad as they'll get"
You'll be lucky, the 1.4 engines are known to die an exciting death shortly after the top end gets noisy.
Fitting another engine is not straightforward, just buying another car is much simpler given the low price of all models.
My 1.4 was mint until day, got my headlamp smashed I bought with 37K on the clock, full service history, with other history showing it had a very easy life as a motability car. Just hit 70k over two years down the line, has never let me down. 30mpg round town have seen 45mpg out of town. Bargain at the price!
at that milage on a 1.4 if you get £500 consider yourself very lucky. also consider yourself very lucky if it doest eat the camshaft very soon. the noisey tappets mean the head is suffering from oil starvation, and it doesnt take long to wear the camshaft down once that happens.
its not that bad now the oils been changed, mind you they did take 6 litres out of it (how that poor car must have been suffering), but would def go for a 1.2 or 1.8 next time
