Hey, I just bought a tachometer and I plan to wire it up myself in my Uno MK2. It has 5 connections, 3 of which I know where to wire them:

Black: -ve (earth)
Orange: +ve battery (memory)
Green: distributor coil

the other 2 I'm not sure of are:

Red: +ve switched (on ignition - to power up the tachometer)
White: the instructions say connect to night lamp. have no idea hehe

I'd appreciate any help I can get! thanks! :)

red is to an ignition live(when you turn the key and the dash lights up)so the tacho is only on with the ignition.
the white is connected to an illumination circuit so you can see it at night. just splice it into one of the lights on the dash that come on when youi turn on the headlights

hmm i read on another thread of splicing into the heater wires for the switched +ve, that's a good idea i think.

re. the white i tested it with a 12V battery and it illuminated, so I think I'm gonna save some time and connect it to where I connect the +12v red. The tach will light up all the time but that's no problem I guess

um it will be for your battery! you can either go into an ignition live(your doing that anyway)or as i said the illumination circuit.

persoanlly would take the ignition live from a circuit thats doesnt take such a draw as the heater. basically anything that only works with the ignition on or you could take an ignition live from the steering column ignition switch live

tachometer wired up :D

I wired it up directly to the battery but put a switch on it, so now i get to turn it on/off with a switch on the dash

it was pretty easy to wire up to the coil as well, there was a white/brown wire with no connection coming out of the coil's plug. It's there for the tachometer! Good idea to have the Haynes manual :)

Well done killfr0g (y)

Do you have any pictures?

I’ve wired up tachometers on a MK1 Uno and a MK2. The MK1 is within a Turbo’s pod, the MK2 an SX pod. Though I had only 1 wire to add in, both times I went for the Green coil wire. Maybe your tachometer works off the coil's +VE .

Welcome to the forum by the way :)

Louie.

maybe a month ago. I just found some body kits for the Uno and I'm really intersted but it would cost more than 1000euros to get them/spray/installation :(

strangely only the red color works for me! and the green one but it switches back to red instantly! but i didnt bother cos i wanted it red so it's just fine :)

could be because i didnt wire up the "memory" wire to the battery (lazy!)
