is it wire less?
Yes it's the NETGEAR DG834G
Problem is on my PC i have everytihng set up matter fact im running from the router right now but when I go to my laptop to get connected onto the internet i dont know what to do, i've tried sticking in the ethernet line into the laptop and connecting up via the CD but that doesnt work and just a bit clueless.

no is the lap top wireless?
doesnt have t obe wireless with a ethernet card
have you added the internet protocall?
but it will be better if it is,
put the modem cd in then go to Index.htm, settings, your user name will be admin and password will be password, if you havent changed it, them wireless settings. setup list, look in Available Wireless Stations, if your laptop there add it

Look at netgears website and have your router to hand. Use the desktop if thats working. the site is very easy to use and they answer all your questions.
Basicly if the router has an ethernet port USE IT dont use USB.
If your desktop is working via a network cable. Big telephone cable. then use the same cable on your laotop and restart it should work instantly.

What happens if you do a site survey on the laptop - what wireless networks is it picking up?

Ok, log into your router from your PC - and then go to the wireless settings page!Mastery said:
At this point, you should be able to turn on wifi, plus set all the encryptions settings [WEP/WPA, etc] SSID, channel number. Here lies your problem I think.
EDIT - I presume your PC is now connected via the ethernet cable, and not wireless itself?

Just to clear up a few things. The router should be set up properly if one PC can use it to get to the www. Lets's forget all about wireless for now, and assume everything is wired. Once all the below is checked, substitute the word network for wifi! ;-)
Provided the network card in the laptop is not disabled and ip settings are set up right for it you should just be able to connect to the router and access the www without doing anything else.
To set the ip settings, open Network Connections in Control Panel. Right click on the Local Area Network icon (or wireless one to use wifi - setting one will not set the other) and select Properties.
Click on Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
Click the radio button Use This IP address and enter the following:
IP address: 192.168.0.100 (This is your laptop address on your LAN, must be unique)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (Automaticly entered setting)
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (This is your routers IP address on your LAN)
These are not specific IP addresses, but they are kind of most common, so in most cases if defaults are used, they should work.
Just do the same for wireless network card, and it should work.

If he is able to access the internet via cable then DHCP is working fine on the router. He doesn't need to specify an IP address for either the network or the wireless card.
Most likely issues:
SSID is turned off on the router.
WIFI on the router is disabled.
WIFI card in the host is disabled/not installed correctly.

It is ok, it is sussed - well will be later once he gets his laptop back!
When he plugged the router in, he just used the setup CD that came with it - this auto-configured the ADSL settings, so he could get online with the PC.
So I explained to him about the gateway homepage 192.168.0.1, etc - which he logged into, and tried to get the wireless settings page up, to enable wifi, with the appropiate encryption, SSID, channel, etc.
Once he gets the laptop back later, then we will know if he is transmitting,
