General Winter Tyres Questions

RobW and Maxi - very good articles ... personally I've read a fair bit about winter vs summer tyres, but not a great deal about all-season tyres.

I did find a fantastic comparison with all three on an ice rink (think it was in Canada).

Just Ordered some Goodyear Vector 4 seasons for the other halfs 4x4 - all season M+S tyree but with the snowflake symbol

I was basically told that all season tyres are jack of all trades master of none. Tbh on a 4WD with them having the snowflake symbol they should be fine in the winter :) i'd get proper winters for a 500 though.

Found the video [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlYEMH10Z4s"]YouTube- Tire Rack Tire Test - Winter/Snow vs. All-Season vs. Summer Tires on Ice[/nomedia]

Shows that All-Season tyres are closer to Summer than they are to Winter in terms of performance

M&S symbol is meaningless, Nankang NS2 are M&S marked but struggle to cope in warm damp let alone cold damp/slush :bang:
If it's the snowflake inside a peak logo it's fine

nope they are probably useless as the warm and damp is not for what they are intended for however the M&S rating as maxxi says it truely defined by the symbol

bit like wearing gym shoes to go wading through a bog true winter tyres are no good on warmer surfaces due to the softer compound

Oh and maxxi they look very much the same as the Ved snowtracs except for the centre band

Yeah they do look a little like the Vredesteins.

Still no closer to deciding what to go for with the Subaru. If I go for 185/65 R15's I can get pretty much anything I want as Vredestein's and Conti's go for ~£55 or so but if I go for 205/60 R15 the better tyres are more like £75 and when you add it up over 4 corners that's a fair whack and I kind of figure with 4wd the Subaru doesn't need quite as much help with traction as the 500 did.... 185's are bound to wear faster on such a heavy powerful car, but how much faster is the question? :chin:

Yup, its that time of year, interesting to see this thread actually started before the ice came.

I have the all season Vredstein Quatracs which got me through all the blizzards last year, and have been sitting out of ultraviolet light waiting for this week.

The Toyos on the car at the moment are leaden when cold but do actually warm up to give reasonable grip, but nothing like the Quatracs.

Will probably swap over at the weekend, unless more Indian summer forecast.

Cheers

Vredstein Quatrac 3’s are awesome (had them on the Panda last year & got them on the Doblo van this year). (y)

Just ordered Marangoni Meteo HP’s for the Punto Evo as they were a very reasonable price for 17’s… will be interesting to see how they hold up when the snow hits… as it does every year up here! :yum:
