General Winter Tyres Questions

The problem is though that they do need to be taken care of just a little and if you're the sort of person that's on their third and a half set of tyres in 20,000 or so miles then they're not going to be treated gently of are they

Better off on summer tyres than knackered winter tyres.....

Too true. Tyre bloke was supposed to ring me back yesterday or today. He never. I'll be getting a cheapish tyre that offers good performance, something like Toyo TR 1 proxes, cheapish but good in the wet and great grip. Had them before. And for the record, this set has lasted me 9000 miles, a new record for me! (they were rotated at 4000 miles)

You don't get it. What I'm saying is that if you changed your driving style you'd be better off and Rob and myself both agree that winter tyres are better in winter.

More money than brains? :p

At least Draig has gone from saying he was too good a driver for winter tyres last year to this year accepting their benefits

Imagine the change for next year winter tyre thread

Quite a thought looking out & seeing the sun still blazing away, winter tyres:D
Apart from the usual chunky tread pattern, the make up of the rubber used for winter car shoes is different for those that dont know. Highly porous hydrophilic rubber is used in most cases, this helps when on ice. The tyre is softer for the lower temp' & although you wouldn't notice because the winter tyre is usually on the car for a relatively short time, they tend to wear easily.

A wee bit more to a winter tyre than just the tread.

I'm considering new wheels now (once i've sold my old set, it's almost as cheap as buying just tyres anyway!) so thanks for your advice, but it was 23 degrees in the shade here earlier so it is a tad early for winter tyres for me, imo (y)

You need two sets of wheels if you're going to run winter tyres. Running winter tyres on rims and then swapping them over for summer tyres on the same rims will get very tiring when you have to do it twice a year every year. Plus if there's a sudden burst of hot weather or a cold snap you can just swap rims over.... swapping tyres on rims will be a frigging pain.

No what i meant was I'm not going to bother with winter tyres and just get some new wheels (maybe) with normal tyres. I may regret this come winter, but in all fairness, last year was a bit on the extreme side and i made it through the snow on bold summer tyres with only 1 major incident which nearly resulted in a crash. As they say, you learn from your mistakes, if it's as bad as last year (i.e. 2 to 4 inches of snow on the road!) I'll probably just walk, or ski in my size 14 shoes! :D

You don't get it though. Rather than "coping" with tyres in the snow you can actually drive with a great amount of control and with a lot more safety with winter tyres. But whatever....

I understand that, but we can't predict we're even going to have any snow can we? We might have a very mild winter after 2 very cold ones, it would be a waste of time/money if the weather was mild imo. I'll cope, but if i crash because of snow or ice, i will show you and you can say "told you so!" :p

See the thing is as much as you annoy the living daylights out of me there would be no satisfaction to me seeing you have an accident. Winter tyres are oodles safer when there's snow or ice around. I mean miles and freaking miles safer and in cold conditions (5 degrees and below) there's still a big difference.

It's all about weighing up the risks i suppose. I've been driving 6 years in all conditions in various cars, some of the snowy roads I've driven on were invisible due to how deep the snow was. I appreciate they're supposedly safer, but what happens when you brake at a junction on a slope, but none of the people following you behind have winter tyres? I can't imagine too many people change to winter tyres at winter, in which case, it could turn into car pinball! :p

Anyway, not sure why i annoy you so much? Most of our discussions are debates about cars are they not? It's up to you if you choose to take issue with everything i say i guess.

They're not supposedly safer..... they ARE safer.

I've never said that you can't get by with summer tyres. After all millions of people do so in the UK every year, just like loads of people get away with bald tyres, bad brakes etc etc. Just because you didn't have an accident before doesn't mean you won't have one this year or the next or the one after that.

Winter tyres will give you a lot more steering and brakes which will give you a lot more opportunity to avoid the sort of accidents which are going to cause you serious injury or death.

Good to see I'm not the only one thinking of winter tyres at this time of the year. After reading the threads last year and the weather we had, I decided this year I'd be fitting winters to the family 307SW. I'm just hoping the summers that are on will hold out another month or so before fitting some winters. Fitting winters to the original 16" alloys then buying new alloys and summer tyres next year, that's the plan anyways lol

Thanks for the good advice above.

Just consider the temperature when you put the tyres on. In the teens the winters won't be as good as summers and if it gets up to 20 degrees? Hmm I wouldn't want to be driving that car. That said there's talk of widespread frosts in a couple of weeks so it might be time, it might not be :)

Yeah after posting I went on the bay looking for a cheapish second set of wheels for it, so depending what the weather is the tyres could be changed over to suit. I wouldn't change them daily just when the forecast suited them.

Tbh I wouldn't bother. Just wait till the weather is cold enough to justify winter tyres all or most of the time. Taking tyres off is a time consuming process

Good point - the argument "Will I have been ok up until now" is a bit short sighted .. it's like a smoker saying "Well I have not died yet, so I might as well continue"

And waiting for an accident in my opinion is selfish, because you could end up killing someone
