500 (Classic) wingless' 1968 Fiat 500L

Introduction

An additional vehicle was required to be added to my "fleet" like I need a hole in my head, but I saw this gorgeous 1968 Fiat 500L and I decided it needed to be mine. For me the amazing condition of the vehicle was the driving factor on this purchase.

This is my first Fiat and my first Italian car.

It will be collected from the seller, World Imports USA shortly using a U-Haul 6x12 Trailer w/ Ramp, pulled by my daughter's 2021 Ford F-250 Truck w/ a Weigh SafeDrop Hitch, so I can get the front / rear placement correct for appropriate tongue weight. Her truck has an unused 2½" square hitch receiver, because it has been used exclusively to tow using a gooseneck hitch in the bed.

This Amazon wheel tie down kit will be used, along w/ ratchet straps to the front and rear underbody tie downs to secure the vehicle to the trailer for the ~3 hour ride home.

A custom fit California Car Covers Supremeweave w/ Flannel Lining car cover is on order and will be used to protect the clean vehicle between usage. I use these covers on all my vehicles and they always look brand new prior to each usage.

My plan is to add three point front seat belts in the near future and maybe also rear lap belts. I have already read all the great topics in this forum on that modification.

That new replica license plate arrived in less than a week. I am VERY satisfied w/ every aspect of this purchase. The accuracy is spot on, both on the website and the finished product implementation. I have zero reservation recommending this company.

Original Front License Plate

The existing empty original front plate bracket is retained to clearance holes using small bolts on the bottom edge of the front bumper.

That bracket was removed for attachment of the new replica front license plate.

The existing corner tapping screws / washers were removed, holes marked, drilled and the new plate attached to the bracket.

The bracket / plate was reattached to the vehicle.

The end result is exactly was I had hoped to attain.

All of my vehicles are vacuumed, blown, washed, blown, dried and covered after each use, to be clean and ready for the next usage.

All of my vehicles have a custom fit car cover from California Car Cover Co., made from their Supremeweave All Weather w/ Fleece Lining material. They have about a dozen other materials from which to select. I also opt for the custom embroidery. I've been VERY happy w/ their products, including the construction, materials and fit. I have ZERO hesitation recommending their products to others.

FWIW, it appears to me that the manufacturer's Fiat 500 cover pattern has been designed to also accommodate vehicles w/ a rear luggage rack / suitcase, making it slightly floppy on my vehicle w/o those parts.

A similar loose fit on a custom cover was encountered on my 1979 CJ-5, where the cover was designed to also fit auxiliary fuel jugs alongside the rear spare tire, plus auxiliary front fender lighting.

My plan for both covers is to modify these at these locations for a snug fit, once I again setup my commercial sewing machine.

The covers are fine as-is in the interim.

REALLY like my Italian flag key fob, plus the FIAT wallet for: my Owner's Manual book; my Safe Motoring Hints book; registration document and insurance document.

The vehicle was collected w/ an Italian "Passport" document and w/ the original multiple year registration booklet. Those documents have been set aside for protection, not inside the vehicle.

A used vinyl Fiat owner's manual wallet was purchased, along w/ an English language Owner's Manual and an English language Fiat Safe Motoring Hints Manual These are carried in the vehicle, w/ the registration and insurance card, in the vinyl Fiat wallet in the dashboard storage compartment.

Really, really like the Owner's Manual. It has been VERY handy for me, even those this vehicle is sooo simplistic and sooo old school. The document is a new printing of an old document. The coated paper is very durable.

Really, really like the English language shop manual. This is reasonably complete and will be handy for me to properly maintain and repair the vehicle. This is a new printing of an old document. There are several instances where the printed information on some pages that is closest to the binding is chopped off and blank. That reproduction error is disappointing but this document is still useful, even w/ this printing error. Really like the spiral binding, permitting the desired pages to remain open and flat.

The Fiat Safe Motoring Hints Manual is an interesting read. My selection of the 24th Edition, from 1971 for my 1968 Fiat 500L was purely a cost decision. This document was much more reasonably priced (at the time of purchase) than those offered for a 1968 vehicle. This is a used document in used condition.

My preference is to have both a printed and a PDF version of all these documents.

The vehicle was collected w/ an Italian "Passport" document and w/ the original multiple year registration booklet. Those documents have been set aside for protection, not inside the vehicle.
These are images of that Italian "Passport" document and my Italian registration booklet.

That "passport" is a nice / thick / folded document, w/ a colored gold leaf crest and an embossed Notary Public stamp, under the signed ink stamp. The "passport" has a matching size clear plastic storage sleeve. The folded dimensions are about 6"tall by 4" wide.

The registration booklet has a thick cover, like a modern passport. It appears to have resided inside the vehicle since 1968, w/ the edges worn and tattered. There are many stickers, stamps and signed notations throughout the booklet. Unfortunately several pages have been torn out, down to the binding. The folded dimensions are about 6"tall by 4" wide.

My vehicle was listed for sale twice on PCAR Market. The first listing showed these two documents. The second listing didn't show these documents. After I purchased the vehicle I asked the seller / dealer to locate these and they were found and provided to me when I collected the vehicle.
