windows 2000 - laptop help needed

i'm getting a laptop which used to run on windows 2000 however has no discs coming with it also it aint working i think it needs the discs to get it up and running again. when u switch it on you hear all the fan and stuff kick in and load up but nothing on the screen the screen worked when it was last in operation the reason it went bottoms up was it was running to much stuff and got a external burner on the go for good measure any ideas we was told that it just needs the software reinstalling which leads to the next question of where do i get windows 2000 from can i get it from any computer shop ? i dont want to spends loads or has someone got one i can use (pretty please ) if thats legal of course any help is appreciated

boot it with any windows disc in (doesnt have to be 2000, use 95/95/ME/2000/XP/etc.)

if it doesnt work, make sure the cd-rom is selected as primary boot device in bios.

if nothing is on the screen it suggests the problem is something else, you should get the boot screen no matter what, allowing you to enter the bios setup. if you arent getting that it tells me something worse is wrong.

you should still get writing on black back ground even if operating system is curupt.
plug an external monitor into the back and see if any thing comes up on that
