Window Tinting Laws?

Anyone familiar with the laws regarding window tinting and light percentages? I know they were having a crackdown in Lincolnshire a few months ago with random Police light checks. Anyone know whats aloud and what isnt?

I think that on the windscreen your not allowed any tints, front windows must let 70% light allowed through and the back windows can have any tint on em...........

If im wrong im sure someone will correct me

I`m currently tinting my spare set of glass for my Uno.

Having read the VOSA guidelines I think theres a possibility you can have up to a 30% tint on the front side windows, assuming the car being tinted has `sundym` tint glass as standard, a 20% film should be passable?

My 99 Jag XJR has black tint glass as standard & is a pretty hefty tint as you can see, & bear in mind it has a white interior.

Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:
The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of
light to be transmitted through them.
Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be
transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light,
then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.

35% is max you can do on all windows except the front (obviously!) here in Sydney.

I fitted Limo black tint in the rear windows of my Focus Estate, and now can't see a damn thing through them when Im reversing at night. So I fitted a reversing camera and thats OK when its not covered in muck thats been dragged up off the road.

Think I may fit some very large bumpers.

I used to have limo tint all round in my original Uno 15+ years ago & I could hardly see anything out the back at night, especially if it was raining.

The Jags about a medium tint, so its marginly better, still not good enough to spot plain clothes though...

I`ve got a roll of chrome tint which is what I had in my Vauxhall VX, its suprisingly good from the inside at night, although I used to get some reflection in them from the inside in bright sunlight during the day.

Chrome would have looked good on my (gunmetal) Uno, but not if I cant do the front sides in it... it just wouldnt flow as well.

I`ve already done the rear sides in dark (not quite limo), I`ll do the fronts in 20% & see if I get any agro. I`ll get some B-Pillar tape as well.

you want to find out the percent of light that passes through the glass without the tinting first to know how much you can tint

Its got standard green tint glass at the moment, I doubt its 5%, but I`d be leaving 10% to be on the safe side if I fit 20% tint.

Has anyone checked what percentage Fiats are usually?

Check the glass where it has the writing on it. If it has AS2 (maybe different letters, cant remember exactly) then they allready have the maximum tint from standard (and it isnt much). Police will charge you if you put film over them without even testing it as the proof is allready there.

Do you know which of those numbers refer to the tint Spentona?
