Just about to take off my thermostat and check it for sticking (which it probably is) and i'm going to attempt to clean it. Will i need a new gasket? If so is it possible to make one out of normal household things? (You know, the blue peter approach lol)
Anything i should be careful of while doing this?

Now that's my kinda response.....no extra expense! (y)
I think i would be considered tight-fisted.......if i had any money lmao:p

I've just had a look in the engine bay. Would i be right in thinking i have to dismantle half the pigging car to get at the thermostat?
It is on the right hand side of the engine, yes? If so there's something attached to the battery tray by the look of it not to mention more hoses than a firemans convention.

more hoses than a firemans convention hahaha :D

you're right the thermostat is behind the big hose on the right hand side of the engine (when looking in engine bay). i think it was only held on with 2 or 3 nuts, plus you need to take the hose off it first.

i think i removed the big black air intake from above the radiator to gain easier access.

i didnt need to remove the battery tray on my 1.6 when i took it off, but its never easy getting your hands and tools into tight gaps. dont give up.

Thanks Jug, i did find the right item then. Stripped off the battery tray (does it really need that many bolts?? lol) and disconnected the looms that attach to it but couldn't get the whole thing off as that thing (whatever it is) attached to the left of the tray doesn't seem to have an easy disconnect and i'm not keen on forcing the issue.
At that point the light started to die and it started to **** it down, so not wanting to argue with God i went for a pint:D and will finish it tomorrow.
With luck i'll also be doing the injectors tomorrow......wish me luck!

Also, the Haynes is really ****e at explaining it, if you're of a mind to do some guides i think, though it's simple for the experienced diy'er, this could use a guide with the "Jug touch".:worship:

the problem with haynes is it goes far too over the top with removing things.

i will do a guide for the 1.6 injectors one day. i've been meaning to for years.
